I am preparing to DM for a Theros campaign that starts at Level 4. My three players each have a unique god to worship, but I am struggling to figure out where their piety should be starting at a higher level. One character in particular has given me a detailed backstory to explain how she has already been in servitude to her god, and I would like to reward some piety for her creative thinking as well. What would be a good starting point for each character's piety?
I also have a Circle of Stars Druid, who worships Kruphix, with a 10 INT and a Hexblade Warlock, who worships Athreos, with an 8 in WIS. I don't want to force them to change their gods simply because the reward systems go against their character builds, but would it be reasonable to change the Druid's rewards to being Wisdom based and the Warlock's to being Charisma based? The Warlock has also considered Oracle, but has not noticed that the Oracle is also Wisdom based.
I’d either keep them at 1, which they get for just choosing a god, or give them 3. Level 4, per the DMG, would start them with the standard gear, so I wouldn’t want to give them a lot in terms of other bonuses. At 3 they get a nice little toy, but they’re still a good way away from the 10 threshold. Then when they do hit 10, they’ll still feel like they earned it.
For the most part, any Tier-1 PC (from 1st — 4th level) are all considered generally pretty much at the same general power level. A PC starting at 4th level would start with the exact same starting equipment and lack of magic items as a 1st level PC would.
