Has anyone ever used the Speed Factor initiative from DMG pg. 271? If so, how did it work in practice? Did your table like it? I've always thought it was interesting, but wasn't sure if it got clunky or if the "decide before you roll" method was well received.
I have not used it but I also find it interesting. As cool as it sounds in theory, it will do nothing but bring your games to grinding halt. Combat already takes up a large amount of time and it appears that this rule could potentially double the time it takes. Perhaps the best course of action to try it out would be to run a one shot with this rule in place and if your players enjoy it then maybe you could implement it into your regular campaign.
See, I would counter that by thinking it would speed up combat. By everyone deciding the gameplan together, then rolling initiative and then the DM explaining what happens, rolling for any attacks/damage as the battle goes, instead of each person looking at the layout of the fight and looking through their spells or features to figure it out one at a time, all the players are doing it at the same time.
But I very much like your idea of using it in a one shot and seeing how it works with my players. I will probably do that.
