I wanted to get the opinion of other DMs of using feats as rewards for Players creating backstory for their characters kinda like the Heroic Chronicle does in Theros. I want to remove the option of taking feats instead of ASI but still make them available. I like the idea of everyone starting a character with a feat to remove the everyone make Variant human option, but I want a reason behind people having these feats. To be clear the big ones (Mobile, Warcaster, GWM, & Sharpshooter, ect) would be saved for downtime quest rewards.
Anyone got any suggestions or feedback about this?
As long as it’s fair, I don’t see why not. I know some DMs that ban Variant Human and just give everyone a feat.
I use adventure hooks as rewards for completing a backstory, and I use feats as adventure rewards too. Complete a crazy Cthulu type quest, maybe get a UA psionic feat. Or consistently do X as a character thing, maybe get a feat related to X. Etc. But that’s just me.
There is a difference between any feat and a feat.
Any feat means the player chooses, so the feat has synchronicity with their build. A feat means a specific feat that any player is unlikely to gain much from.
For example giving a player the randomly choosen feat of Sharpshooter does not help the melee fighter or a caster.
Or giving a Character a feat which makes sense from the events of the game.
They made an incredible bow shot, and landed the killing blow on the BBEG? Earning Sharpshooter makes sense. There were able able to make an insanely hard Arcana roll and recall just the right esoteric lore to be able to open the portal and get the Party out of the ancient caverns just before they collapsed on the Party? Maybe Keen Mind makes sense.
