I made some dice which I believe to be the next step in D&D dice:
These dice have native support for d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. All results can be read from this one die without requiring any math or trickery. The design is based on isohedral geometry which makes these fair dice.
The tricky part is to explain everything using just this image though.. this is one of these things that are so much easier to explain in person or with a video. I will do my best however:
This die, the dUltimate as I call it, has 120 faces.
Group 6 faces together to get 6:120 = 1:20 odds to create a standard icosahedron/d20. This is done with deep grooves creating large triangles.
Group 10 faces together to get 10:120 = 1:12 odds to create a standard dodecahedron/d12. Actually an icosahedron has exactly 12 corners, so we use this to our advantage and place circles on the corners of the icosahedron's triangles.
Group 15 faces together to get 15:120 = 1:8 odds to create the octahedron/d8. This is done by using a central icosahedron's triangle and redirecting (with arrows!) 3 half-triangles to that central triangle to get 3x3+6=15. This also cuts the die nicely in the 1/8th of a sphere.
Now pair d10 with d20, d6 with d12, d4 with d8 and double up the d4, d6, and d10.
And that's basic probability story behind it!
To roll it just... roll it!
Then you read the number you require from the topmost triangle/circle. When there is an arrow instead of a number, you simply follow that arrow. There are also mnemonics build in to make everything easy to remember in such a way that you wont require a cheat sheet after your 10th roll:
d20 numbers are largest and boldest and uppermost inside the triangle
d12 numbers are in center of circles
d10 numbers can be used for d10 and d00 and d% so they have de 0/% sign
d8 numbers are at the 8 o'clock position in the triangle and are in an 8-bit font
d6 numbers are in the circles and represented with pips just like standard d6 dice
d4 numbers are at the 4 o'clock position in the triangle and are represented with triangles just like the tetrahedron(d4) shape
Long story short:
Which of your characters would use these highly advanced, rune-like, math-correct, magical-looking dice?

It's a nice idea, but d20 dice already have a balance problem, so a d120 die is going to share that in spades. Also, people like their click-clack math rocks; Sometimes rolling 20d6 is part of the fun.
Congrats on making the design. Its cool to see people do stuff like that.
Personally i find them visually convoluted and having too much information all around. If i want to roll 8d6 for a fireball and i had to roll 8 of those dice - i'd find that 10x harder then just rolling 8 simple d6.

True, more surfaces = bigger manufacturing challenge to make it physically balanced. With sharp edges on this one it will be less prone to standing on a side though.
And you can still roll 20 of these, no one is stopping anyone from doing that!
They have a very arcane and treasure-planet-map look about them!
I would be interested in seeing a video of how they work! Or perhaps some more in-depth photographs of examples?
Cheers!
I have yet to make a video, but I've made a page with some info about the function, math behind it, and a gallery with images of prototypes: https://www.lenpolygon.com/

Keep it up though! :)
Thanks, appreciate your comment!
This will definitely be more difficult to read (especially with 8 dice at same time!) than your standard dice. It will be more interesting for dice that you don't roll that much, for instance if you only ever so often roll d4, d8, and d12, than this die can replace those no problem and you don't have to keep searching for the right die!

Maybe try to combine the idea into the digital space and make the iconic d20 serve all purpse but change the sides with the dice you want to roll. like an LED solution. Just throwing stuff at you. But keep being creative. Thats nothing you wanna lose :)
I like how they look, and could possibly see myself getting a pair as novelty; but honestly while I like Flowcharts (big fans of FFG Star Wars's talent trees), I don't want to read one on a die (I need to wear glasses to read regular dice as it is). I've seen spherical dice before (maybe we all have, the kickstarter ad just won't leave my YouTube feed), it seems one of the sell points is that spherical dice have some sort of internal ball bearing system that minimizes the actually distance rolled ... demo I'm familiar with has a d20 sphere and a d20 polyhedral rolled and every time the d20 travels further than spheres. I like that feature as I can't stand dice shooters.
Again, they look cool but they seem to weigh so to speak more as a mini game in themselves than a real viable replacement for my polyhedrals. I am also curious about size given my (and many middle aged gamers') "vision thing."

I like the idea of making something like this for digital use! No idea where to start, but I'll research it a bit.

Thanks for the feedback! It's actually a 120 sided die, so not completely a sphere. The math behind it is all on lenpolygon.com . Since it has flat since it settles quite OK, but a dice tray is required for strong rollers. The overal size is 40mm in diameter which is about 1.5 inch. The smallest digits are very similar to other standard sized dice.
This is exactly the sort of thing I would buy if I saw it at a yard sale or something. I love it.
Cool! Maybe you might consider Kickstarter as a sort of yard sale? I intend to do a campaign there in July for this design - I've also designed a small game to use this die for.

my trickster cleric/wild magic sorcerer would fall in love with these!
Made a new photo of a few prototypes. Here I show both painted and unpainted variants.
I think unpainted will be nice for modding. This allows you to either get the contrast you desire for maximum readability, or perhaps a color scheme to match your character, OR only use parts of the die or color code them for combined/composite rolls!

Which one do you like best? Black or White?
I usually like dark dice, but here i certainly would tend to the white one as the readability seems higher and this is an important factor :) Here is a 3% sales advice - considering the amount of surfaces try making a pride dice with it.

My wizard, he'd chuck them at enemies using his sling. They seem to be the perfect size and shape for that.
Jokes aside, really cool! I'd still rather keep to my dice collection though. For simplicity's sake.
Hah nice one! Can really imagine that Wizard that became a slingshot master!
