At first I thought "only 2, they can do better than that," then I checked. Obviously a free level 1 feat should not give an ASI, have a prerequisite or be one of the more powerful options (sentinel, war caster, etc). That didn't leave very many options:
Dungeon delver
Healer
Savage attacker
Magic initiate (maybe)
Martial adept (maybe)
Mage slayer
Mounted combatant
Shield master
If the idea is that the feat comes from your background, any of these could be appropriate. If they want to avoid being too build specific, the first 3 or even first 5 could be good. I think 4 to 6 options total would keep characters from being too same-y.
You can also get Magic Initiate in the Ravenloft, Eberron and Forgotten Realms campaigns - it isn't allowed as a background feat in the Dragonlance campaign. This is mentioned in the campaign specific documentation at the end of the ALPG v13.0 (currently only available on Discord as of Jan 10, 2023.
In the campaign i'm running, i've allowed a free feat at level 1 but banned variant human to prevent double down. They could pick any feat. It allowed them to play any race they wanted without feeling missing on a feat. On top of this, since the campaign is set to end near level 12 (Storm King's Thunder + extras...with 4 PC on a campaign set for 4-6, we will see when we get there), it felt like a really good idea to allow them to benefit from those.
Sounds like fun for a homebrew game :)
This forum is discussing the specific rules allowed for play in the shared campaigns run by D&D Adventurers League. These have somewhat different rules and the rules are applied to all players and DMs running Adventurers League games. Adventurers League lets players take their characters and play them in any Adventurers League game being run anywhere else - at home, at a local game store, at a game store in another city, in another country, online, or at any number of conventions or public venues. Players log the adventures they have played and the rewards they have earned along the way. They can then take the character and play it in any tier appropriate AL game anywhere. A DM at any of the events can ask to see the logs or character sheet. So, allowing a choice of feat a level 1 is a popular option for homebrew games and AL has recently adopted it because the character backgrounds in Spelljammer, but in AL the extra feat is available to all characters and is limited to Tough or Skilled and in some of the AL campaigns Magic Initiate.
Lmao, i didnt even know i was in that forum when i read this. Provably missclicked for the DM one on my cell. Thanks for pointing it out, i've deleted my previous post :)
Skilled or Tough if not already in your background.
