So the listing as a PHB race is a bit misleading then no? This caused quite a discussion at an AL table recently. I really appreciate the work DnD Beyond does and I do not blame them for oversights (we are all human) but maybe a note in the race selection screen may help things?
You are right about the source and page number. However, the first line of the Variant Aasimar states:
Variant Aasimar
This aasimar variant originally appeared in the Dungeon Master's Guide as an example for creating your own races.
The only reason why the PHB appears as the source is that this variant Aasimar is free. The source is actually Basic Rules for the purpose of making this race appear for free users. I am sure the developers' team will get things cleaner.

Two years later... Almost chose this race as a noob, for an AL game.
However, :) for season 9 you CAN choose an Aasimar (who can get wings) for an AL legal game without requiring Volo's as your +1 source.
ALPG 9.1
"Plane-Touched Wings
If you wish to create an aasimar or tiefling, that character gains the benefit associated with their race, below. Neither benefit is contingent upon selecting the referenced resource as their +1.
Aasimar. You can choose aasimar (Volo’s Guide to Monsters) as your character’s race. Additionally, at 5th level, you can permanently replace the Light Bearer trait and racial trait they gain at 3rd level to sprout feathered wings—gaining a fly speed of 30 ft while not wearing heavy armor.
Tiefling. At 5th level, you can permanently replace their Infernal Legacy trait with the Winged tiefling variant trait (Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide)."

The variant aasimar is listed as a race for the PHB in the character builder: Example
However from what I can discern it is NOT allowed in AL as a PHB race (i.e. you would sill need to use VOLO's as your +1)
Is this correct? If so, I may ask to have some kind of disclaimer on the race page.
The variant Aasimar (as well as the Eldarin) comes from the DMG as an example of homebrewing new races.
