Im making this char for adventure league but not sure if there is better options for how i want to play him. The idea is starting rogue lvl 1 then obviously going bear totem. After that get cavalier to lvl 9 eventually. Then lvl up rogue take mastermind at rogue 3 and go to 7. So many combos that work so well togeather but is it overkill? Also not sure best way to lvl them for effective
Basically is the reaction or bonus action economy to much for this char?
There are two big problems with your planned build for AL.
1) The build starts with 13 strength as a barbarian and you are relying on getting a strength magic item to boost the strength. (Your character includes a belt of hill giant strength). You may or may not play content that will give you something like that and if you do the belt would likely not be available until sometime in tier 2 at the earliest. Until then your strength is only 13.
2) Rage does not work with dex based attacks. You can sneak attack with a barbarian if you attack with a finesse weapon using strength but not dex. As a result, you will be limited to using the 13 strength for attacks (if you want to use rage and sneak attack).
3) The biggest issue though is your delay in extra attack. Level 5 is a significant jump in power for both casters and melee attackers. Martials gain extra attack which effectively doubles their damage output since they get two attacks/turn instead of one. (ignoring bonus action attack options granted by some dual wielding feats and class features). This build doesn't get extra attack until level at least 9 (1 rogue + 3 barbarian + 5 fighter) ... and you will only have 1 ASI/feat in that build as well. As a result, I think you might find the character a bit underwhelming to play at times compared to a barbarian/fighter or barbarian/rogue build which could both pick up extra attack at level 5 by taking barbarian to 5 first.
Finally, you have 5 ASI/feat + 1 feat as a variant human. These will come on line quite late in the build depending on when you choose to level up. In addition, you might want to consider some of the opportunity costs of multiclassing this much even going to level 20 - level 11 fighter will give 3 attacks/round, level 11 rogue gives reliable talent if the skills are important.
If you really want the bear totem resistances and rage then you might want to consider 11 fighter/3 barb/6 rogue which gives you the 4 skills with expertise. Alternatively, if melee combat is your forte then consider champion fighter/barbarian for enhanced criticals. If you really want expertise in athletics then one level of rogue is sufficient. If you want a sneaky barbarian/rogue then 5 barbarian/15 rogue would be an option.
Anyway, just some things to consider but the build will be quite difficult to play without the strength boosting items you have planned for and these aren't guaranteed.
Ive already have someone in al willing to run the content when i hit 5 so my strength will be good enough to still attack with strength using rapier. Second in Al my char isnt finalized till lvl 5 anyways so build starts at 5th anyways and playing whatever effective till then. I also figured with 21 strength im not to far behind with delay of asi.
Feats is the reason im going v human so i at least get something before first asi to cover for delay in it. I understand damage wise im not doing much initially but this build isnt meant for damage anyways. Most of build is online before lvl 10 except for mastermind aspect. I also want rogue 7 for evasion to make me even more tanky
I appreciate the advice though and im definitely trying to figure best lvl per lvl on how to build him efficiently so as to not to be a burden to group
What do you hope to gain by adding rogue? It seems superfluous. If it's the bonus action help from Mastermind, have you considered picking up shield master instead of rogue and taking more fighter levels to get extra attack.
Well I'd have uncanny dodge which combined with bear barbarian makes damage done to me a joke. I could technically give up evasion at lvl 7 probably to be honest. I definitely considered shield master feat for sure which replaces evasion. I just want to make a tank that forces as much damage to be directed at him but the uncanny dodge would help me survive that damage as well from burst
