Thing might sound like a very small thing, but I really would like to get my character a "covered metal helmet" that goes well with his scale mail. However I cannot find helmet as a purchable item. As it is AL I must be able to buy the item to not loose it as the end of the session.
Technically Scale mail only includes a coat and leggings (and possible a skirt) so does not include a helmet. Heavy armor covers the hole body which plate specifies includes a visored helmet (and I would interpret as all heavy armor having a head protection).
I don't play AL but in most games things for flavor are allowed so you could refer to taking your helmet off and mopping your brow after a battle or having an avatar which includes a helmet although it won't change anything mechanically.
There are magical helmets available such as the helm of telepathy or the helm of comprehend languages so you could try to get something like that.
socks aren't an item, but you have those...just say you have a helmet that goes with your armor...just doesn't increase your AC. don't worry about the helm matching your scale mail...make it match your socks.
Just to second the comments above. You should be able to do anything you like as long as it is cosmetic and not mechanical. Helmets in 5e are cosmetic. They are mentioned in flavor text, occasional magic items, and explicitly in the description of heavy armor. I've always assumed that any suit of armor I choose includes a helmet/hat/cap and gloves/gauntlets if I want it to do so.
"Bob imagines Bruenor charging into battle with an axe, one horn on his helmet broken off." "Bob writes down the starting equipment from the fighter class and the folk hero background. His starting equipment includes chain mail and a shield"
Barbarian description: "Frothing at the mouth, a dwarf slams his helmet into the face of his drow foe, then turns to drive his armored elbow into the gut of another." Barbarians only have light and medium armor proficiency.
Paladin: "They hold angels—the perfect servants of good—as their ideals, and incorporate images of angelic wings into their helmets or coats of arms"
"suit of plate includes gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet, and thick layers of padding underneath the armor"
It seems pretty clear from the various pieces of flavor text that helmets are meant to be an optional part of any armor. However, they don't have any mechanical impact on the game. There are no rules for them - so from an AL perspective, I would just describe your character as wearing a helmet that matches your armor (or your socks or underwear :) ). If you want a cost for it then just consider it "clothes" from the PHB since that is functionally what it is doing.

There isn't anything mundane in the book.
