Tabaxi monk is a fun choice in general. Monks like to be fast and mobile and a Tabaxi can double its speed letting the character get to where it needs to be. The key stats for a monk are dexterity and wisdom .. Tabaxi covers the dex and the charisma boost could be useful depending on the skills you choose. The Tabaxi also has a climb speed which can be useful.
As for backgrounds, AL allows the use of custom backgrounds - choose 2 skills and a combination of 2 languages/tool proficiencies (i.e. 2 languages, 1 language/1 tool or 2 tools). You can also choose a background feature from any of the backgrounds in the AL allowed source books. So, I would suggest either picking whichever background fits your character concept or just picking up whichever skills you think you might enjoy using the most and which might fit with how you imagine the character.
AL doesn't impose restrictions on the "fluff" or role playing aspects of your character, just the mechanical ones. So you are free to describe the character's background in whatever way fits the idea you have for the character best.
P.S. The only constraint is that you have to choose the monk archetype from the PHB since Volo's is your +1.
Hi, I'm fairly new to D&D and adventures league. I'm using Volo's Guide To Monsters as my +1 to PHB to pick the Tabaxi race for my monk character.
However I'm currently stuck on what would be a good background to pair up with character.
Does anyone have any good recommendations and advice with using a tabaxi monk for AL games?

I also made a tabaxi monk for AL. I'm going way of shadow and have the urchin background.
Haven't had an opportunity to play it yet... 😭
