So, I want to dig into Season 9 of DDAL, but I am faced with a series of adventures and / or the hardback book, which both look like they are competing for the same storyline? How does the hardbook interface with the independent DDAL09-0X adventures, because color me confused ...
In general, the AL adventures are complementary to the hardcover adventure. Some of them can be used as supplementary adventures run as part of the hardcover or in conjunction with it. Others could potentially be used as an intro or side quest. The tier 3 and 4 adventures can possibly be used to extend the Avernus plot line. I don't know how well intergrated the AL adventures for season 9 are to the events in the hardcover but I know the season 7 AL adventures at higher tiers provided for additional play after the primary objective of the hardcover was complete.
The hardcover is probably a good choice if you have a table of mostly reliable players who are interested in developing characters over the longer term. When I have run AL hardcovers I try to get folks on board with playing the character only or primarily as part of the hardcover so that everyone levels up at the same rate and the characters develop much like a home run campaign.
On the other hand, if the table varies a lot from week to week either with players or characters because folks play different characters or level them up playing outside content then the AL adventures can be a better choice since the plot lines are shorter and the adventures are divided into smaller chunks that facilitate play with a cast of characters that varies every week.
Wish there was on overall story arc flowchart that shows where you would "stitch" some of these in instead of relying on having to read everything before making those decisions - would be nice to be able to plan it all out ahead of time .... for example, I run the hardcover, but then want to be able to run DDAL09-02, -06, and -09 ......
AL adventures are generally in the same state but different city has been the best way it has been describe to me. I have dm the book and have only 2 modules left to complete the season. After tier 1 your home base becomes the Emporium. I DM the hardcover on one night and modules on another night. I did allow the same pc to play in both.

you can do either/or, or mix in all/some of the AL adventures in while you run the book. but yeah, some mix in better than others.
