Confession: I don't like flanking, it gives a large party too much advantage over single monsters (not to mention it negates kobolds' one redeeming trait, Pack Tactics). My AL DM, however, loves it...and he already nerfs enemies and hands out advantages like candy on Halloween. I'm under the impression that flanking, as an optional rule, isn't supposed to be used in AL, and I'd love to tell him...but am I right? :-)

You are correct.
Page 5 of the AL FAQ v9.0 explicitly lists which variant and optional rules are allowed in AL play. Flanking is not one of them.
