The short answer is, you can't. If you add a character it automatically goes in as an ally.
The long answer, is to find a monster of the same CR, and add that. Then when that monster's turn comes up in the initiative order, just take the NPC's turn. We use a lot of NPCs as villains in our campaigns, and this was the easiest solution that we found.
