I'm looking for examples where the fey have had an influence on the happenings and affairs of those on the Material Plane in Forgotten Realms, especially on Faerûn on the planet Toril.
When I talk about the fey, I refer to the fey powers such as the archfey and other nobility. I know that they are essentially interested in keeping to themselves and busying themselves with their own affairs, but at times there are reasons why they must look further afield, perhaps even though only through their emissaries or servants.
I'm also interested in what possible interests and aspirations the fey might have on the Material Plane, why would they be interested in getting involved, and under what circumstances would they initiate a venture there?
(1) They might be forced onto the Material Plane against their will.
If the Feywild and the Material Plane bled together for some period of time, then they Fey may either explore out of curiosity, or feel the need to defend themselves from those that would attempt to occupy their domain.
(2) They may wish to reclaim stolen artifacts.
(3) A conflict with powers from other antithetical planes might force them to play a game of cosmic chess.
(4) Perhaps a muse or love interest.
(5) etc...
Fey exist on the same spectrum of human experience as any other creature, so it's all fair game. How it plays out is where the differences really shine through.
Memnosyne had great points, the only thing I would add is that there are a bunch of stories which depict the fey as loving games or making deals with mortals. Obviously its your world and you should do what best fits with your table and game, but a minor fey noble could be a good opportunity for your players to make some deals with a supernatural creature without having to go all the way to devils / eldritch gods.
Maybe one noble wants your players to sabotage the interests of a rival fey, or sets up a series of challenges for the group as part of a bet with other nobles. It also doesn't have to be nobility - maybe the local pixies or other minor fey can be bargained with to gain information on whatever challenge your players are dealing with. Like it was said above, fey can be used for the whole gamut of goals or desires so it really depends on what you want to accomplish first.
