The flow of time within the lair is altered such that everything within moves up to 10 years forward or backward (sphinx's choice). Only the sphinx is imme- diately aware of the time change. A wish spell can return the caster and up to seven other creatures des- ignated by the caster to their normal time.
This means that:
1 - The Sphinx can actually throw players back in time or to the future if they enter their lair. For example: Enters the lair, Sphinx rolls time 10y to the future. Once they leave the lair and since the time flow was super accelerated, they actually are 10y in the future?
2 - This only happens inside the Lair boundaries, meaning that no matter how the Sphinx alter the time flow within the Lair, once they leave the Lair everything is "back to normal"?

If 2 were the case, it wouldn't require a wish spell to fix

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
My interpretation is that the lair, contents and inhabitants are moved through time. As only the Sphinx knows this has happened, this seems consistent with the writing. As a Wish spell is required to return to the correct time, this also stays consistent.
So, basically, the flow of time, within the lair is modified to speed you through to the future, or rewound into the past. Jeremy Bearimy and all that rot. As you're all experiencing said time flow, only the sphinx, who activated the effect, knows what happened.
Don't fight a sphinx, in its lair, if you don't have a Wish spell, or have access to your own time machine.
Do fight a sphinx in its lair if you want to change the campaign setting pretty quickly.

Hm that's interesting.

I had this thought too, but it's still not that clear
