My first ever game of D&D was in an arena where in the centre was a wrought-iron crate. I of course wound up in front of it, and when the sides fell open a giant centipede emerged. A much, much tougher one than that of the Monster Manual. We eventually got it beat, and I walked away with some cuts and bruises (the most damage I took was to my waistcoat and ego), but that was scary. A much more interesting and unique monster than a snake, I found.

Zero is the most important number in D&D: Session Zero sets the boundaries and the tone; Rule Zero dictates the Dungeon Master (DM) is the final arbiter; and Zero D&D is better than Bad D&D.

In general the following are standard horror themes and boost the horror.... but this is mostly visual. It is hard to do horror in audio only, usually video makes things scary.
Horror themes:
Insects and microscopic living things. Small enough that they can get weird body parts
Squids/octopus
Body horror - things that duplicate body parts, the tongue eating louse is night-mare inducing horror.
For my old beastmaster I had a snake statblock who I reflavored as a centipede just because the giant centipede block is so bad. So I feel this big time.
them the drakewarden came out and I remade him. Still had my drake look like a centipede, though!

How to turn up the horror factor in your game? Replace any snake-theme monsters with centipede-theme! Same stats, but more legs.
Yuan-ti are now centipedefolk.
Medusas have masses of wriggling centipedes on their head.
Marilith demons have a humanoid torso and body of a giant centipede...

Plus, all centipedes are venomous, not all snakes are.
