in cold hearted killer, Players have to fight sephek-kaltro who can destroy each character in one shot.
i've seen some people online saying, players are meant to level up first by doing other quests.
What other quests? each one seems like it's too hard for a level 1 group.
Only way i see it is to make up my own stuff until they hit level 3 then start the initial quests. If that's correct, then is the adventure book just wrong?
Again new DM here, i might just be missing something simple. Help please.
The guidance is for the party to do one of the two Starter Quests, and after completing one of those two possible quests they will become 2nd level, ready for the 10 town quests.
Sephek can't destroy a PC in one hit. With a good roll the damage might render a PC unconscious, and thus have to start making death saves, but there are 4 PCs against one NPC so there are far more attacks against Sephek than he is dealing out.
Lol, we teetered on the verge of TPKs until we hit level 6. True, our DM is old school and does not pull his punches, but we felt like our only option for survival was just constantly to run away. My advice is to keep a pulse on how the fights are going and, if you think it'll make a better story, adjust HP/damage rolls/etc. on the fly. Your DMing style may not even make two winter wolves a deadly encounter. It really just depends on how you run the monsters.

I'm a first time DM,
it just seems to me all the starting quests, seem impossible for 4 level 1 characters to complete.
Good wolf bad wolf will have the players fighting 2 winter wolves, https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17061-winter-wolf

Yah after reading a bit more, I decided to throw them into two little fights to get them to level 2, then they should be strong enough.
