I'm currently building an adventure for my players based around an ancient forest temple. Deep within the temple, locked away I want to have an ancient dragon that had been captured.
I want to know if anyone knows of any species or specific monsters that don't like dragons and would have a reason to imprison one?
It would have to be a damn powerful creature / entity / god - Ancient dragons are incredibly intelligent and powerful.
Does it have to be captured, or just trapped?
It could have gotten itself in a situation where it trapped itself: attempting to move inter-planar, using the dimensional rift which the temple is built around, for example.
If it really needs to be captured - then maybe a cabal of high-power wizards ( who may or may not be around anymore depending on how long ago this occurred ); perhaps some of its own kind banished/imprisoned it ( it could be interesting to come up with a reason why a group of solitary territorial hunters decided to band together to put one of their own down ).

Trapped would be a better way to put it. That would actually work really well for the story.
If I decide to have it captured however that would be a perfect way. I don't want my players fighting the dragon anyway as it would absolutely demolish them, I want them working together to help free it.
Well the only thing i could think of is maybe it is a metallic dragon and the chromatic dragons were the ones to do it? Maybe it was younger when it was trapped and now it is just alot older? the hard part is that dragons can cast true polymorph and become humaniod so unless its trapped by magic it could just leave the way your pcs came in.

You could use Antimagic Field and then maybe have there be some powerful artifact, or maybe have some story about how younger dragons power the magic for awhile so they can fight a younger dragon.
I now feel like i should steal this for my campaign! lol

Giants and Dragons have a centuries-old conflict that never really got resolved, so I’d say those are the closest you’d get to “natural” enemies of them. A herd of storm giants interrogating a dragon about the location of XYZ could work, if you haven’t already made up your mind

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Dragons are almost always either good (metallic) or evil (chromatic) so any powerful faction of the opposing alignment would have reasons to imprison one if they can't slay it.
Petrification is an easy way to imprison a creature in such a way that it can't escape on its own but it'll still be alive thousands of years later.

That's a good idea! The only thing i wouldn't want to do that for is the players wouldn't be able to talk to the dragon to find out if its good or not, being stone you cant even tell what color dragon it is.

Would there be any specific magic that would force the dragon to either remain in its true form?
You could use Antimagic Field and then maybe have there be some powerful artifact, or maybe have some story about how younger dragons power the magic for awhile so they can fight a younger dragon.

Go right ahead!
That should work perfectly, plus give my dragon a better backstory
