So one of the party pets is a Steed; a silver drake. The party has put their animals into stasis for a short time, and I am wanting to have an unexpected side-effect, where the drake gains an awakened state for a spell, and can speak common. There will be an optional side-quest to make the change permanent.
My curiosity is, what do I make him say He's been treated well, and likes the party, and will probably be going through an existential struggle about whether ignorance really is bliss. Does he want to remain awakened?
The quest itself is already sorted, but I am curious how people would run a suddenly sentient drake (warhorse stats, reflavoured to bites), and how they suspect they will react to the change?
I suspect the first question it might ask would be "Hey! I'm hungry, could I get some food?" ... which then surprises both the Drake and its rider since the Drake may have thought that before but never so clearly and never so expressively.
I don't think the Drake would get into existential questions to start with since they honestly don't have the education or knowledge. The Drake knows eating/drinking/sleeping/carrying passengers/comfort and discomfort/when a saddle fits well and when it doesn't/how to fight and presumably how it feels about its rider and their friends. It has a very limited worldview even though it can now think and express itself better but it lacks information to make informed decisions. It will likely tell its rider what it likes and what it doesn't. If the Drake knows anything about making attacks that would work better (i.e. the reins get in the way half the time) it would probably let its rider know.
The Drake would likely be amazed that its rider can now understand it. However, the Drake may think that the rider has changed and can somehow communicate better rather than the Drake itself having changed.
The Drake may already have words for things in the world since it may have heard them used and understands what a saddle, bucket, oats, meat might be but it may not have the words, ideas, or background to have more complex discussions (up to you depending on whether the process that awakened it also transferred some set of knowledge).
I would play it full of ennui. Like, I am self-aware and now what? Is this all there is? What is my purpose? Am I here only to serve these people? Surely, there is more to my life. Get big into existential philosophy. Maybe have it start smoking and give it a French accent.
Sarcasm......... I had a Warlock summon an Imp as a familiar, I made him this slovenly, ill tempered git that would do as he's told, but try and stuff it up and then smirk at the PC.
