I’m running Out of The Abyss, and my party is really attached to Stool, the little myconoid sprout. They’ve been having some trouble with motivation to stay in certain towns. They’re planning to go to Neverlight Grove soon, and I’m currently thinking Stool should stay in Neverlight Grove, but ask them to come back for him. That’ll encourage them to go back to the Underdark in chapter 8, but it might make them angry. What should I do?
If stool signals them he wants to stay because hes "at home" now, players getting angry in this case is pretty meta, as they/their chars should respect the fact.
The book says that taking a bunch of fleeing Myconids away from Zuggotmoy is an option
Depending on how the characters interacted with the myconids and what tasks they accomplished for their hosts, they might depart in the company of a myconid guide, or even two whole circles of myconids fleeing the grove before Zuggtmoy’s madness takes them. Sovereign Phylo doesn’t stop the characters or Sovereign Basidia from leaving, still convinced the cause it embraces is one of joy and prosperity for its people
Another outcome is being defeated
Any character reduced to 0 hit points in this encounter is knocked unconscious rather than killed. If all the characters are knocked unconscious, the party wakes up in a fungi-filled cave 1d6 + 4 miles away from Neverlight Grove, with or without their NPC companions (at your discretion). Their drow pursuit level decreases by 1, and each character is infested with Zuggtmoy’s spores (see the “Neverlight Grove: General Features” sidebar).
I think to have the companion leave with them they'd need to discover Zuggtmoy's corruption and then tell their companion as well as talk to Basidia at which point they may flee or get in to a fight with Zuggtmoy's so that the companion looks for them afterwards. They would not be able to go to Neverlight have a relaxed stay and then take Myconids with them they need to give them a reason to leave. If the myconids do go with the players then likely they will be some what effected by the demons corruption and may suffer nightmares which may lead to lead in to the visions the players get of the Fetid wedding.
