So I am making a Dungeon for my campaign, and I have a evil wizards library, that I think should be guarded by something. But I am not sure what it should be.
The wizard is a Divination Wizard, and a worshipper of Graz'zt if that helps. The party are 8th level when they encounter this thing. I want it to be a cool encounter, but not all that hard to beat, as they'll have a lot of minions to fight in this Dungeon, and they shouldn't have to spend themselves killing this thing, but I don't want the Paladin to end it, in one round either.
Any ideas on what I should put in the library? Something a wizard could have tamed, or created, to protect his secrets.

a portent machine. doesn't deal any big amount of damage, but it can TANK and at the start of the round it rolls 1d6 d20 s and for the next round it can replace a d20 roll with one of the portentous ones.

I love this idea. I love the thought that basically the whole of this wizard's library is just the one mimic, that keeps its masters books, and notes safe, in return for getting to eat anyone that is trying to steal his secrets!
You could sneak in multiple mimics; some as books on the shelf, one as a chair, maybe the ladder used to reach high shelves. Have each member of the party roll to see if they happen upon one while searching the library. Ghosts of long dead librarians would work.
Assuming the guardians of the library put the critter in place, I'd think they would use something that doesn't do physical attacks which could harm the contents of said library.
See Ghost recommendation above, or something with psychic attacks.
Absolutely. They are great guardians. Their creator gives them elaborate and detailed directions about their job and how to carry it out. They can have an absolutely wicked sense of humor too. But the PCs may not know that. So now what if they're trying to do whatever it is they need to do in the library with the flaming skull following them around making their lives miserable but not sure if they should pick a fight and risk burning the library down. These guys are totally something an evil wizard would put in their library. They are hard to put down and make stay down too.
*Throws fireball at the stacks* Catch! *flies off somewhere else"
You should do one of the types of sphinxes, perhaps an evil and corrupt sphinx.

(He/Him)
A wizard opens a rift in the wall in front of you, walks through, and eyes you, eyes glowing a brilliant blue. “Where are the beans?” He says menacingly, gritting his teeth in frustration. Suddenly squirrels pour out of the rift and swarm over you.
Hi. I really like squirrels, reading, and D&D (obviously). Uh, yeah. I also GM 👍.

A lamia disguised as a librarian or apprentice of the wizard, perhaps with some lesser constructs for support (animated armor, glasswork golem, that sort of thing) if its attempts to charm/seduce/befuddle the party don't work

Thank you!
The ghosts of the librarian staff. Similar to the one from Ghostbusters.
Maybe they even leave the adventurers alone until they break the library rules or until ordered by an overseer?
