I may be missing the thread that already exists, and may be told this was already answered but here it goes. I am debating purchasing either the Waterdeep Heist Campaign Book at my gameshop, or purchasing PHB and the Waterdeep Heist on D&D Beyond. I was just wondering what the campaign book will look like, is it just a web "PDF" style book or something different? Is there a way to preview the book before purchasing? I am long term hoping my group will chip in to purchase all the core books and the DM subscription service, but it is all dictated by what the layout is for me, since I'll be doing all the reading for the most part. Thanks again, if I need to repost elsewhere let me know!
The adventure modules are similar in layout - the contents page shows the chapters and sections within each chapter.
References to monsters, whether Guard or Ancient Red Dragon are tooltipped for convenience, as are proficiencies and relevant links to other books, like the PHB or DMG. It's pretty handy to have references to conditions like stunned or spells like fireball.
All of the artwork from the physical book is incorporated into the online design too.
For offline viewing, you can also download and install the D&D Beyond mobile app, which allows you to read your unlocked compendiums/adventures on your mobile device whilst offline.

Speaking of which, is there any plan for a desktop app for offline use?

I was looking around for an answer to this myself. I got the physical book of Waterdeep Heist. I am considering also getting it in the marketplace mostly so I can read it on my tablet (easier to carry around to work and stuff) but it's not showing up in the mobile app. I don't want to buy it in the marketplace if it wont be available on the mobile.
Waterdeep Dragonheist is available on the mobile app - you may need to update your manifest first though.
Open the App, on My Account tap on your avatar, the go on Custom Support and Check for Manifest Update.
With regards to desktop app - I use an android emulator on my laptop, which runs the D&D Beyond application perfectly ok for me. Please note that this is not officially supported however.

Take a look at the Basic Rules compendium.

Thank you. I appreciate your response. I should have imagined it would look like that!
