So one of my PCs just killed an avatar of death and wants the scythe. Does the scythe disappear when it dies? ANd if it stays, should I let him take it? T%hanks in advance!
The Reaping Scythe is described as a spectral scythe, implying it is somewhat discorporate. If I were running the game, the scythe would be part of the overall entity and disappear with it.
However, you may have a golden opportunity for a plot hook here, depending on what the player wishes their character to do with the scythe!
You could allow the character to capture some shard of the spectral wood of the scythe. The shard can be used to track down the physical location of the original scythe (it's in a distant realm with many adventures between here and there). This gives you time to think about the properties of the weapon that will be at the end of the journey, and will test the players commitment to this concept.

It's up to you as the DM!

You could let him take the scythe and have it be cursed, slowing turning him into an avatar of death.
