Are you tired of waiting around for a Dungeon Master? Do you want to take fate into your own hands?
Whether you long to spin tales of intrigue and mystery, stump players with complex puzzles, or bloody them up with insane combat, the Level Grinders program for you!
The Level Grinders is a program we have created to help novice Dungeon Master's learn how to run a game of D&D. Level Grinders are given one-on-one assistance from an experienced Dungeon Master (called Mythic Heroes), weekly prompts and assignments to hone key skills, and regular one shots ran by Level Grinder members with the help of their Mythic Hero.
Our goal is to walk you through the basics of being a Dungeon Master so you can be confident in running a game. Hopefully find that it’s actually not as hard as you think! If you want to see if you have what it takes, click the link bellow and we can get you started on the fun.
I wanna try! Um I would say I’m still at novice DM. I’ve only run three game sessions so far. Home campaign that I made for my friends where I’m not really stringing a fleshed out narrative. I had my PCs write down who they were (family, past jobs/education prior to adventuring, short backstory) and their current goal in life whether it is big or mundane. I’m loosely making sessions off that and introducing story threads for each of the players at the moment. We haven’t gone too deep yet since they’re still figuring out how to play, but I wouldn’t mind learning tips for when the figurative ish hits the fan.
I'm about 6 Sessions deep into my first campaign as a DM, and I kinda of went off the deep end and tried to make an interconnected world on my first go? Lol. So far, the players think it's going well, but I would really love an experienced eye to know if I'm doin' alright haha
You know I think its cool that you are helping others but I just cannot seem to understand why those who are looking to DM dont just dive right in a d do it. Its not like its hard. Sure there are some tricks of the trade and that can vary greatly from one DM to the next. Also there is that experience factor. Another thing to keep in mind is that a DM is always learning with a perpetual hunger to learn more. A DM who has been around the block can be a trove of knowledge for those who are looking to learn. There is an eminence amount of information out there for DMs new and old with this digital age. Honestly it can be overwhelming to even those who have been doing it for years. I have been rolling dice in D&D since the mid 80s. mostly as a DM. In fact I think I have only played as a character 3 times. The last time was back in AD&D. You know what though. I love being the DM. I think that those looking to DM for the first time need to understand that there is some work involved with not only creation but anticipating what your players will be doing next, and that is by far the biggest challenge, but that is what makes being a DM fun. Seeing what your players come up with is the most rewarding thing for a DM. For those who want to DM or are considering it. Just dive in and do it.
I completely agree with you! What we focus on more so than anything is building a new DMs confidence in themselves. I am a firm believer in the trial by fire method. Practice builds skills. Even if it doesnt go perfect you have something that you can build on now and work from there. So really thats our goal
Everyone learns differently, because everyone is different. Because trial by fire works for you, it doesn't mean it works for another person. There may be very creative people that are paralyzed from committing to DMing because of factors like anxiety, general introversion, and other individual reasons. If something like this helps them, excellent.
As for the OP. I like the idea of a mentorship. For me I'd rather have a regular group of 4-5 DMs that get together on Discord/IRL and hash out their stories, get inspiration, and collaborate on DMing in general in an open way. That interests me, but that might turn others off (just think of work meetings, the people that never speak up but you know they have a lot to say), so maybe this program is right for them? Anyway, good luck and to anyone that participates I hope you find yourself at the table and/or improving your game!
Oh, I didnt mean to say we teach with trail by fire. Just that I am believer in its merits. We do something more similar to what you described, a place where peeps can come together build off each other and continue to grow. We give writing prompts and other things to help foster creativity and even do one shots on a regular basis for those wanting to test their metal. We work with them on an individual basis if they feel they work better that way. All we are here for is to help support those who want to continue to grow in the game.
I was more responding to BrokenDM than you. The "I don't understand why?" comment he made.
My point being is anyone who wants to DM should just do it. They will learn as they go. I do see where you are coming from though. Everyone learns different and yes some have social anxiety and the like. Hell I have a really bad case of it. So if someone really wants to do it they will fine a reason to get over any social issues and push forth regardless. There was a time when tools online were not even something to consider because they just did not exist. Times are different and I mean very different. I feel that a lot of these new folks looking to DM see it as something that you need to be educated on so they look for someone to teach them the ropes. Not that its bad but I feel that to many need their hands held now days. And this is not just with being a DM for a game. Again I feel that Pundaddy is doing good by helping those who want to learn do so.
