I am an old DM 3e learning 5e currently trying to drag my 3e party (kicking and screaming) to 5e. Can anyone clarify what exactly has changed from 3e to 5e or point me in the direction of a concise explanation to convince my folk because I have yet to find one!
Thanks
Meg

Sometimes a Nat 1 tells a better story than a Nat 20 ever could.
For me, the main changes are that 5e feels like D&D again. 3rd edition didn't really - it felt like someone had described D&D to a mathematician who played rolemaster and got them to create a game system. Don't get me wrong, I played and Dm'd a bunch of 3e and 3.5 and had fun, but in the end, the game just drowned in it's own complexity for me.
5th edition was designed to have more consistency in the way it works - you don't have to consult charts for bonuses & penalties - combat flows MUCH quicker and is fun.
Me? Played 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 3.5... love 5e! Consistency and faster combat are the big things. Proofreading and playtesting means solid system that is easier to play and DM. Would not go back! Good luck in getting your group to follow.
