I'm a dm (5th edition) and one of my players wants to play a Great Old One warlock who believes their patron is actually a Celestial patron. To everyone else it's obvious that it isnt Celestial, but the Patron fools the warlock because the warlock is schizophrenic and the patron plays on and manipulates his delusions
My problem is I'm stumped as to what I should use for this guy's patron. So, is there any being powerful enough to be a patron that could passed itself off as a Celestial I'm open to solutions from any edition and homebrew.
Can the patron not just fool the warlock because they are an all powerful old god? Making them schizophrenic and having their symptoms abused just feels a little unneeded, I get that it feels like a good plot hook but if you play out the concept of the character levelling up and gaining more power through the patron it feels a little gross. Doesn’t feel the right way to use real Mental Health issues in this setting as actually helping the character in a meaningful way would be counterproductive to them levelling up.
I know that’s not the question you came to ask but we have to do our part to get rid of the stigmas that’s exist around MH.
the trouble is that the abilities you get different greatly for Celestial & Old one

so are you planning to play it as a celestial warlock that is secretly an old one, or an old one that is faking a celestial? You can’t really change mid way
You could go with Hastur, he doesn't have wings typically but other than that he's pretty regal looking. He has been described as a "beneign god of sheperds" so you could spill that into a angelic figure
I agree with Ironpacifist that Hastur is the way to go. One of his/her/their avatars is known as the King in Yellow, who cuts a regal and celestial figure.

Zariel would also be an option... she is very powerful and is actually a fallen angel, so she should be able to pretend still being one.
She's not a Great Old One patron.
There is no dawn after eternal night.
