Tanarukk are orcs with a bit of fiendish blood. Basically demon orcs. The're stronger and smarter than normal orcs, and they sometimes lead orc tribes. It's kinda gross to think about how they were created, though.

Back in early editions, they cannot use the word “demon” to describe D&D demons, so they use the word “tanar’ri”. Tanarukk is literally tanar-orc...
Well,Tanar'ri are basically the "newer" demons (only a few million years). The original demons were Obyriths, super-powerful demons that creaated the Tanar'ri. But then the Tanar'ri rebelled against their Obyrith masters, killing all but a few, who were too useful or too powerful to kill. Basically every demon that has a stat block is a Tanar'ri, besides the Sibriex from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.

Thank you! Idk all this. I’m gonna Google Obyriths.

Sure, but none of that is related to what WuDnD was commenting on, which is that the moral panic of the 80s led TSR to invent new fantasy words to use for 2e so that they didn’t have to talk about “demons” and “devils” and fuel the absurd cultural perception that D&D was black magic and Satan-worship.
Aren’t demon and devil basically synonyms though? Maybe that confused people.
Not in D&D. In general, demons are chaotic evil and come from the Abyss, and devils are lawful evil and come from the Nine Hells. Baatezu and tanar'ri still exist as terms in D&D, but the game went back to usually calling them demons and devils after Society™ calmed down because it's less confusing.

My friend was thinking of using one in her campaign

The're pretty close, but not in DnD.
