Apologies, have had a few job interviews to keep me busy. I'm tossing around a few categories in my head and would love some opinions. I'm thinking cosmic horror/weird fiction could work for any category. For inspiration, I'm torn between whimsy/surrealism (think Through the Looking Glass), fantasy warfare, and fantasy post-apocalypses. For player options, I've always been interested to see work on things relating to time magic, but I believe that steps on the toes of the DM category from contest 4. I could also see a focus on fantasy technology which could include various contraptions and vehicles as well as toys for artificers and whatnot. I'm also open to any ideas that you think would inspire some creativity!
Eldritch/Cosmic Horror is an awesome theme in my opinion as well as Time Magic (although, as the creator of the Primus statblock I might be biased a bit xD). I could see Eldritch/Cosmic Horror as a DM category (monster statblocks and magic items) category and time magic as a player category (time-themed spells and subclasses).
I think all your inspirational themes sound very interesting.
Toys for artificers would most likely be magic items and thus a DM category or inspirational category; it sounds interesting too, but maybe you could go more along the lines of "crazy inventions"? This category, named "The Homebrewinator" was actually one of those I had considered if I had won this contest :-D
Other themes I considered were steampunk stzff, volcanoes, thunderstorms, deep sea horrors, or even something related to dice and playing cards :-)

I personally would like to see a psionics-themed category, either PC or DM, at some point.

I dont think theres anything wrong with a repeat of time-theme since the original was a DM option and your version would be a PC option, so there will be different focuses on what is made even if the themes are similar. Youll likely see more dunamancy spells or time-jumping subclasses as opposed to the monsters and magic items of the 4th competition.

Eldritch horror sounds awesome for a DM options.
In my experience, time magic is really hard but also rewarding when done properly. So I guess it's good for a competition then. You could take a different spin on it than CotFB IV, and its a different category anyway.
Surrealism sounds WAY HARD. It could work... but given that time magic is a harder one I'd go for post-apocalyptic or war. I think post-apocalyptic sounds interesting.
Thank you all for the help. Here's the new competition thread. Please let me know if something is incorrect or unclear. I'm very excited to see what you can create!

Oh, and I love storm-themed stuff, too.
Paladin main who spends most of his D&D time worldbuilding or DMing, not Paladin-ing.
