Meet Gobboss the Magic Man, a 4'2" undead goblin boss who is ridiculously muscular, incredibly ugly, and absolutely convinced he's the greatest wizard to ever live. Gobboss was originally an ordinary goblin boss until he was resurrected by my necromancer, Sartar, using a custom homebrew spell I created. Unlike most temporary undead summons, Gobboss is a permanent summon who stays with my character between encounters and adventures. He's become a permanent companion in our campaign, and I've been teaching him magic as we go.
His first attempt at casting Toll the Dead went so badly that his fingers were permanently blackened. Despite this, he proudly considers himself a powerful spellcaster and has developed his own weaker version of the spell, which he calls Burger the Dead. Gobboss also wears a brown blanket as his wizard cloak, complete with ear holes, and regularly flexes his muscles to demonstrate his superiority.
Some of his abilities include Burger the Dead, his questionable attempt at necromancy; Gobboss the Magic Man!, which allows him to terrify another creature so badly that it might wet itself after he defeats an enemy; Gobboss Unimpressed, where he insults enemies who fail miserably at attacking him; and Goblin Charmer, which makes him inexplicably charming to other goblins and certain similar creatures.
I created Gobboss as a homebrew CR 1 monster based on the original Goblin Boss, with some changes to reflect his personality and newfound magical abilities. He's become one of my favorite characters in our campaign, so I wanted to share him with the community!
I'm currently a level 2 Necromancy Wizard, so I'm especially interested in hearing whether Gobboss's stats and abilities are balanced for a companion at my level. I'd appreciate any suggestions for improving his stat block, adjusting his abilities, or making him more balanced without losing his personality. I'm also open to ideas for how he could gradually develop as my character levels up. My goal is to make Gobboss useful and entertaining without having him overshadow the other party members or become too powerful. Any feedback, balancing suggestions, or fun ideas for Gobboss himself would be greatly appreciated!
