You may select a feature from a different subclass within your class, as long as you meet that feature's level requirement. Features that grant spellcasting, such as Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster, can be selected but are locked at level 3, granting only the initial ability as described.
I think this works. I don't want to lock all features, some can scale without issue. Spellcasting was really the only one that breaks it.

What happens if I take this feat at a much later level? Say at level 12 I decide to grab the EK spell casting, does this mean I can only use 1st level spells? It feels really lack luster at that point, I'm better off taking something else if I want it to be truly effective. If I want spell casting I must take this feat as early as possible otherwise it's a waste.
That right there is the fundamental difference between your description and Aaron's. Aaron's description locks spellcasting to level 3 (the level at which the feature is normally granted) regardless of when you take the feat. Your interpretation would lock the spellcasting to the level you were at when you added the feat. It's just a matter of which way you intended it to work.

The issue is how the feature works. The feature you are selecting in this case is Spellcasting, which is a level 3 ability. There is no level 12 Spellcasting feature. So saying, I want to take this level 3 feature at level 12 should you be able to then use the spellcasting as if you were a 12th level EK? Maybe, but I think it would have to be tested. My feeling is that this would be too strong.

Ok, I can understand that stance, it makes a lot of sense. I guess I'm a bit generous with what I give my players so I saw no problem with bumping the Spell casting ability to match the level when you took it.
Oh believe me, I am big on min/max, the character I am playing now is lvl 7 and consistently puts out over 100 points of damage in the opening round and ~60 each round after that. I don't try to be op, but I do like optimization and in 5e, often times simply optimizing your character makes them op.
The first draft of this was to allow any class to select any feature, but that is just too easy to break
Feature Savant You may select a feature from a different subclass within your class (or classes if multi-classed) as long as you meet that feature's class level requirement. Features that grant spellcasting, such as Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster, can be selected but are locked at level 3, granting only the initial ability as described.
*You can optionally allow the spellcasting to scale, based on the level the feat is selected ex: A level 12 Battle Master fighter selecting Spellcasting from Eldritch Knight can use the level 12 EK chart to determine cantrips known, spells known, and spell slots.
It's a shame you cannot make it also mechanically work as intended within DDB (you would need to have an almost endless list of choices, and you could not publish it due to copyrighted material) but I really love the idea, makes for extremely interesting options :)

Just because I can't help myself, I'm trying to come up with the most concise description possible in case I want to try this at my table. Here's the best I have so far:
You may select a feature from a different subclass within your class if you meet that feature's level prerequisite. The feature remains at the level listed in the feature's description and does not scale with future advancement.

Yeah, maybe one day it will work with an easy add. For now just have to customize the feat I guess.

EDIT: It's your feat, word it like you like. Congrats on coming up with an interesting and compelling one.
"Not all those who wander are lost"
Is a 'Pact of the Chained Tome Blade' Warlock going to be OP?
Looking for new subclasses, spells, magic items, feats, and races? Opinions welcome :)
You can’t take that. You can only choose a feature from another Subclass, and the Pacts aren’t subclasses.

Ah, I see where it went. I misread the updated changes, thanks for the correction.

This is a good feat. Please publish it and link it so I can upvote it :p

Thanks everyone.
Looks good to me too. Much more constrained and thematically appropriate. Nicely done.
