I’m doing something insane and giving magic items to level 2 characters (I’m not playing with them much longer and I want them to feel like they got a good experience). As a result, I’m throwing in some cursed items.
One of these is an item of my own creation, the Ring of Youth. It’s not public yet but the gist of it is that it slowly deages them until they become a baby. How long (on average) should this curse last? You de age a die roll every long rest, so should I use a d4, d6, d8, or d10?
De-aging effects are tricky. There are some races that mature (and this are playable) in just a few years, while others can live several centuries.
If you are talking about 1dX years every long rest, a young race could be youthed to uselessness in 3-4 in game days. If you want slow de aging do months and do 1d12.
A. There’s no need to be rude. Please be courteous to fellow posters.
B. Your “Option A” and “Option B” looked the same thing just phrased differently. Which is why I said yes. I know notice they aren’t completely the same, yes, but ultimately it doesn’t really matter
C. “Cease to exist” is a bit of an exaggeration: it would be very tough on a weapons-based character, but spellcasters (whom are the only people I plan on giving the item to) could shrug through it. I also failed to note that the item gives you advantage on ALL Charisma checks, and even deaging has its benefits: your mental ability scores stay the same, and you get gp back because you’re eating less. Sorry I didn’t say this: I will post the item online here in a second.
By "cease to exist" I meant turn 0 and die (or be a smart baby I guess). A 100 year old elf will turn into a baby in an average of 4 days with this item.
And being unable to walk or carry items with single digit AC, HP roughly equal to level, and going last every turn will end an adventurer even spellcasters.
Good point but you’re also assuming the curse goes on unchecked. I have a healer ready to cast remove curse for a small fee. I think that option balances it a tad. But, I do agree it’s a bit much. Which is why I’m wondering if I can change the die or something to balance it out.

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention de-aging happens in human years. Yeah, I don’t want an elf to get of scott-free.
What does "human years" mean? Percentage of lifespan? Based on age of maturity?
Basically yes
And yes it is 1dX in years. What should X equal to be decently balanced? They do also retain mental scores btw: only physical scores decreased
"Option A, option B, or something else?" "Yes."
Thanks very helpful...
Even if it is a d4, they will de-age an average of 2.5 years per day and cease to exist in about 10 in-game days. Thats a pretty harsh curse.

Look under magic items: Ring of Youth

And now I won't have to search for it again.
