I want to make a subclass designed around a construct familiar, acting as a puppet controlled by the player. Something less magical and more mechanical, if you will. I am trying to decide, which class this sort of focus might fit the best.
On one hand, perhaps bard because the puppet could be used for entertainment outside of combat. On another hand, I am thinking that maybe it would fit best for a rogue, using it as a specialized killing tool. Or, perhaps because of its mechanical design, it might work best for the Artificer class.
Also, I am not sure whether there is really a point in designing something like this for 5e, since spells like Animate Object exist

I would say artificer. As of right now, each artificer subclass has its own sidekick/pet mechanic.
