Hello, I was wondering if this has ever been done, or if it is too powerful? Basically this would be some sort of 7th or 8th level spell, that when cast would deal damage and possibly lower the strength stat of the creature by say 1d4+?. I couldn't find anything similar, apart from the shdadow's ability to drain the strength stat. Maybe the effect would last only for a set amount of rounds, maybe after a long rest, or a greater restoration. I would like any input on this spell.
The thing about spells like feeblemind is that in addition to lowering stats, it effectively removes a character from combat. How do you imagine a depletion of strength would effect a creature?

Not exactly the same thing, but the Sickening Radiance spell (4th L.) causes a level of exhaustion and the Enlarge/Reduce spell (2nd L.) can be used to cause someone to have disadvantage on Strength checks and saves as well as reduce their combat damage output.
I wanted to reply just in case someone came across this thread and need another idea. Ray of Enfeeblement (2nd level) makes the target deal half damage with all attacks that use Strength until the spell ends. 1 minute, concentration. I was looking for a spell that effectively lowers Strength for my BBEG to use against the party Barbarian, and this was the answer I was looking for.
Shadows reduce the strength of targets they hit. When reduced to 0, the target dies. These, and similar, effects that target ability scores are a great way to scare PCs. You can homebrew a spell that has a similar effect. Any PC wearing plate that gets their STR reduced below the STR requirement for the armor, is effectively trapped inside their armor. It is also interesting to note how long it takes to remove said armor. ; )

Also, ray of enfeeblement does something similar, if not as damaging.

So it's not too powerful. Go wild.
