I created a new variant for Tiefling and have replaced majority of it's features, however those features have not shown up in the variant race when I go to create a character using that homebrew. Anyone know a reason as to why? The only one showing up is the Darkvision feature and the ability score increase isn't getting added in.
After reading the comments and considering, I think I am going to go with the following system:
Your species gives you a choice between two ability scores to add a point to. If it is a species with subspecies, then the base will determine one option and the sub the other
Your Background will give you a choice between another two scores to add a single point to.
Finally, your class will either give you a fixed point, or a choice.
This will in give you in total +3 points to your character, which is in par with most species's (Is that the possessive of species?) increases.
First, here is a list of species and the scores you get to choose from. (I'm just doing PHB first, if people like this system I'll do the other books.)
Dwarf: CON. Hill dwarf: WIS, Mountain: STR Elf: DEX, High: INT, Wood: WIS, Dark: CHA Halfling: DEX, Lightfoot: CHA, Stout: CON Human: Any score of your choice. Variant humans do not get this and instead get a feat. (This is very powerful, and I'm not sure if it is balanced.) Dragonborn: STR or CHA Gnome: INT, Forest: DEX, Rock: CON Half-elf: CHA, or instead gain your choice of two skills. This is in addition to the two skills you already get. Half-Orc: STR or CON Tiefling: INT or CHA
Next, backgrounds.
Acolyte: INT or WIS Charlatan: DEX or CHA Criminal: STR or DEX Entertainer: DEX or CHA Folk Hero: STR or CON Guild Artisan: DEX or CHA Hermit: INT or WIS Noble: CHA or CON Outlander: WIS or CON Sage: INT Sailor: DEX or CON Soldier: STR or DEX Urchin: DEX or WIS
Finally, Class.
Artificer: INT Barbarian: STR Bard: CHA Cleric: WIS Druid: WIS Fighter: STR or DEX Monk: DEX or WIS Paladin: STR or CHA Ranger: DEX or WIS Sorcerer: CHA Warlock: CHA Wizard: INT
All in all, not that complex. Here is an example character's bonuses: Vialia, Lightfoot Halfling Sorcerer. Since Vialia is a Lightfoot halfling, she can choose between getting a bonus to DEX or CHA. She will choose CHA. Next, her background is Urchin, granting her a choice between DEX or WIS. She will choose DEX. Finally, she gets an additional +1 CHA from her class. Vialia's final bonuses are +2 CHA, +1 DEX. Thanks for the feedback, it really helped. What do you think of this iteration?
I really like this! Just one thing - the mountain dwarf gets 2 +2s, because it has terrible features. I would suggest either giving mountain dwarves an additional +1 ASI, or some kind of additional feature to make up for this.

I personally think the Mountain Dwarf is fine. Light and Medium armor is pretty good on a Dwarf Wizard, so I don't think it should get an additional ASI.

If you say so. But anyone wanting to play a barbarian, monk, cleric, fighter, paladin, druid or artificer (and probably rogue and bard - medium armour restricts their ability to add all their Dex to AC) will never play a mountain dwarf because it gives them nothing particularly useful.
Sure, it's good for wizards, sorcerers, some rangers and warlocks. This is actually quite funny, because mountain dwarf wizards used to be a niche choice and with customisable ASIs they become among the best options.
Correct me if I'm wrong JoeltheWalrus, but this system can be used in tandem with the Customize your Origin system presented in Tasha's, just not the ASIs part. This would let a Mountain Dwarf Monk trade the light and heavy armor proficiencies for weapon or tool proficiencies, which is really good for post-Tasha's monks.

Yeah, that would work.

I like this system, but can you please alter the racial bonus part to only add Strength, Dexterity or Constitution, as they are the only true hereditary traits within a species...

That is a fairly touchy subject, one that has a tendency to get threads locked. I'll try to be brief. There are two angles we can look at this from. First, the game balance angle. Only having STR, DEX, or CON buffs would require rebalancing of backgrounds towards mental scores, something I'm not sure I want to do. Secondly, there is the whole discussion about species and ability scores. +1 isn't a significant change, but I hope it is enough to placate both sides of that argument.

So why do I want to ever play a human?? I like the use of background and class adjustments. What if you just got rid of the racial abilities adjustments all together. Just used your background and class. What I recall (which is not much) most races only get a +2 not +3 to abilities.

Most races got a total of +3. +2 to one score, and +1 to another. To answer your question about being a human, you would probably want to be one to get a feat, or just for the floating point.

One thing I noticed is you can put all your scores on one ASI, which means you could get a +4 on one ability
Secondly, I think the purpose of Custom Orgin is to not bullhorn classes into picking specific races. I don't think they did a good job but I get the idea.
Thanks. I gave Kobold's INT, since they are meant to be clever trapmakers.

That's what I would've done. Looks good!
