" Wait. Wait." Lucy whispers to Gruenic, putting her hand on his shoulder. " This is the dragon's den and a very nasty place. While we don't have many places to maneuver, the dragon can ambush us from every direction. If we get hit by its breath weapon, you might survive but the rest of us don't have much chance. " TheElf wizard looks back at her friends and asks them. " So before fighting with the black worm, let's check how much we know about it. "
Nature ( Searching for knowledge about Black Dragon. Especially about its breath weapon and personality) :20
You received some schooling in the regal dragons and remember that the black examples were known for their acid-based attacks. In particular their breath weapon, which would expel in a long line rather than the cone which some breeds were capable of. You also remember that these dragons were renowned for being equally adept at moving on land, in the air or even underwater.

Sila folds into a seated position before descending, centering her Ki once again and feeling much refreshed as she rises. "Yes, that was much better. Bree? How is your darkvision?"(should be ok if we are still under the 8 hours?)
"Lucy, yes, what do we all know about Black Dragons?" She thinks on her own knowledge trying to recall stories of anyone she'd heard of defeating one and how they did so? Had she heard anything useful at all? nature16
After they'd all had a chance to chat on Dragons, she takes to the chain ladder and descends quickly, eager to be back on firm ground again.
Sila thinks for a minute on her limited knowledge and says, "I have heard that Black Dragons are a species of the more maliciously-minded Chromatic dragons but recall little else about them. Of little help, but perhaps with all of our knowledge together? I don't think I would expect it to be sitting there out in the open waiting for us." Then peers down over the ledge before they climb, "But where would it conceal itself?" She adds studying the terrain below.

Garavant catches his breath and dusts off his clothing and armor and weapons to present a neat appearance for future negotiations. He emerges from the brief respite nicely energized and ready for more intriguing adventure. He pauses for a moment, wondering if it might be unwise to go after a dragon. He vaguely recalls a story his mentor once told him about some sort of dragon or another.
"I'm pretty quick, maybe I could draw it out?" Sila says moving to descend the Chain ladder. "Or would a little sneakiness help? I could channel the shadows and cause muffle the sounds about us for a time again?" Then glancing again at the ladder, "Why do you suppose this is here? The Dragon couldn't possibly need it..."
Offering to use her Ki again for pass without trace unless she should save her ki for attacks and defense?
Bree has a hard time sitting still during the rest. She is clearly really excited to see a dragon in real life and keeps mumbling on about seeing the dragon. "I think the dark vision should hold for a little while longer, I think you can focus your ki better on other stuff for now."
On Sila's question on the ladder she responds "Well obviously people want to meet the dragon.. That and Dwarves liking to always dig deeper I guess. Maybe there was some rare metals or something down there". On possible battle plans she adds: "Don't forget, I foresaw someone in our party hitting an enemy really good, I think it might be Garavant with his rapier, could be on a dragon. I also saw a foe fail miserably trying to dodge an effect of ours, does anyone have any idea what that might be?"
Garavant has heard of black dragons, although can offer no further insight than that already offered by Lucy and Sila.
The party reaches the bottom of the ladder and surveys the area described by Artemis via Lucy, with the waterfall just as thunderous as they were told.
With his extended dark vision, Gruenic can see that the way to the west seems a dead end; Artemis confirms this with a quick fly by.
Somewhere in the cavern, maybe to the east, a long, low growl rolls out. It sounds distinctly...draconic.

Before the party goes further, Lucy shares what she knows about the dragon. " Looks like the worm already knows we are here. Before engaging in it, I want you to remember two things." She raises her index finger. " One, the black dragon's breath weapon is a straight acid splash. So don't form a line and leave space between each other to avoid being an easy target." Then middle finger. " Two, the black dragon can breathe in water. If I am the worm, I would probably attack from the pool where I can shoot acid safely without worrying about the melee weapons. With my spell, I might be able to block the acid breath once, twice if we're lucky. But there won't be third chance. Dragons aren't fool. So if we want to fight with it on our ground… we have to lure it to the shore. Any good ideas? " Lucy surveys her friends and asks.
While the wizard girl take with others. Artemis is flying toward.the source of growling. The white owl flies so high that her feather almost touches the ceiling of the cave. Artemis isn't happy. No owl will be happy is they have to sneak to a dragon. But Lucy made her order very clear. She can speak draconic and she wants to know what the voice is talking about.
Gruenic says “Good to know Lucy, I have no experience with dragons, I’ve only heard about them in tales, and the outcome was usually not good. So we will prepare for acid, try to split up and not be in a line, any other thoughts? Against the acid my sturdy armor may have no chance.”

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
"We're out of range for most attacks up here, so we'll need to descend." Sila studies the chain ladder and the area around it looking for any signs of the acid that Lucy speaks of. "The ladder would be where I would strike were I a Dragon, all of us in a neat line. But I'm not as smart as a dragon, perhaps the acid might ruin the ladder and destroy a food source." Then a supremely concerning thought hits her and she waits to descend, studying the ladder again remembering her own illusion skills. "Do Black Dragons know magic? My own study of shadows gives me powers of illusion. The ladder wouldn't be an illusion would it?"
Intelligence check if needed for suspected illusion15 .
Sila struggles to discern any illusion, but a careful tug at the ladder proves it to be real.
(My apologies, I think I moved you down the ladder already)
Artemis heads north, east and then south, over two bridges and into a huge chamber of the cave. Alcoves and walkways dot the perimeter, while the main floor is dominated by a huge underground lake about 90ft wide and 130ft long.
A short distance offshore sits a small isle thirty or forty feet across. Stalagmites thrust up at the ceiling above, and the dark waters lap quietly at its shores. Several spots on its surface glimmer even in the gloom, suggesting the promise of treasure to be had. Scanning the island with perfect vision, Artemis spots the distinctly unique hilt of Sunneedle.
Atop the treasure-laden island sits a huge black dragon, its heavily scaled chest rising and falling slowly as it rests. Artemis must have been distracted by the shock of spotting Sunneedle, as the dragon raises its head to look directly at the owl 120ft away.
"Hmmmm, are you lost little one? Not many owls around here. Tell your friends to head over with their offerings, I am tired and have no time for wallflowers"
With that, the dragon moves her massive frame with graceful ease and slides off the rock and into the pool, disappearing into the darkness.
Lucy covers her face with her left hand. In her near one century life, she never concentrates this hard. Her thoughts are so intense that you can almost see their sparks fly above her hair.
With her illusion, Lucy shows her friends about the dragon and its small treasure island. " … The environment is really bad. I can't guarantee we can get out of the battle without dying. On the bright side, we found the dragon and still have some time. Do you want to engage the dragon now? Or retreat to the upper floor and return later?" Lucy looks at the Halfling wizard. " And Bree. I want to know the result of your divination today."
Lucy: Ask Bree abouther Portent.
Artemis: Retreat, hide behind a rock and survey the pool with fear.
Sila gazes back up the ladder noting that her friends are not descending and quickly climbs back up to view the illusion Lucy is sharing with the others. "I think our best hope of survival is back that way. At least we know where SunNeedle is though. As much as I hate to admit it, even a distraction and trying to grab the artifact is an extreme long shot. That Dragon doesn't seem to miss anything."
Depending how far down the ladder Sila had gotten, she'll use dash if needed to get back up to the others quickly. Movement speed 40'
Sila shakes her head. "I'm not sure that battle is one we could win right now especially in mostly water. Should we head back and hope they didn't bar the door?"
Gruenic nods and says “Perhaps there is something we missed back there that could help us now that we have seen the wyrm.” He looks at Lucy, says “We will get your SunNeedle, don’t you worry. Now we know where it is.”

" I agree. " Lucy nods. " The wyrm said offering. Maybe someone set the ladder for offering tribute to the dragon. Like the stinky lizards on the upper floor. We could use coins or other shining things to attract the dragon to the ground. I will study my book for useful spells. You guys can search your hand for something that can lure, trick or restraint the dragon"
Artemis
Before she leaves the den of the black dragon, Artemis once more ventures to the cave and observes what is on north side of the pool which is surrounding the treasure island. After that she will fly back to her master with full speed.
Artemis manages to swoop high and scout the rest of the dragon's lair while she swims underwater.
The north of the cave has a small cove, while the passage to the east leads into a smaller room. In this smaller room was a pool that looked like it had an entrance to an underwater passageway just below the surface.
