The sun is setting now, this questioning has gone on for quite a long time now, and you have drifted most of the way to your destination. An island can barely be seen on the horizon, but it is many miles away.

do we know who the crimson empire’s enemies are? Cassandra sees a few paths forward for the box of secrets. She will discuss with the captain and crew out of earshot of the prisoners:
1) open it and find out what is inside/attempt to foil the plans or pass it to our allies.
2) pass it to our allies unopened- Let them figure out what to do with it.
3) have our allies or us either look at or alter the contents and then get them to the person they were supposed to go to, pretending like they were not intercepted at all, maybe with a disguise..
Other questions- what is this island? Where is the place we are going now? She does not want to kill any of our captives, but maybe dropping them off somewhere wheee they can’t cause trouble is good. And maybe we can convert some of the crew to join us.... She asks our crew if they would be willing to share some of our newfound wealth to secure their loyalty...

(OOC: The Crimson Empire has a history of wars with the Kingdom of Ottera, but they are not currently at war. At the end of the last war decades ago, Pondcoast City was given to the Empire to be a colony as a gift to restore peace. The relationship between the countries is tense, but peaceful. As such, the Kingdom would not take prisoners of the Crimson Empire for fear of reigniting any ill-will. The island you are heading to is a long, narrow island off the coast of the Otteran coast. Hope this cleared everything up, let me know if you have anymore questions.)

OOC- Thanks! That helps. So maybe they are planning a surprise attack.
Cassandra talks to the captain and available crew privately: “so this ‘ere mystery box has to do with troop movements, and we knows the Crimson empire is probably up to no good. What ye suppose we should do with this information? Anyone got connections with Ottera’s army? Might be they would want to know what’s in this box, and have a word with our Earl afore we set im free. As fer his crew, might be we can test their loyalty a bit and see if some of our new gold might win em to our side, or not. Course we’d have to keep an extra eye on them fer a bit after. “
I nod at Cassandra's suggestions before turning to the crew again and saying;
"Born and raised doesn't necessarily mean 'loyal'. I mean, look at your old Earl here. Do you think he got his status from hard work for the empire? No. He was born into it. And he was willing to give you up for his life and a couple of pennies. So I'll ask ya again, how loyal are you to the crimson empire?"

(Congrats on 500 Posts :D )
"I'm sure I speak for all o' them when I say that I do love my country, but it just ain't worth dying for. We were hired out from a dock to carry the good Earl to Pondcoast, and promised quite a hefty sum of gold to do so. We ain't with the army, those fellows were knocked overboard yesterday. I know we are your prisoners and such, but we would be much obliged if we could go on our way back home, seeing as this job certainly won't be paying anything."

Cassandra looks at the Captain and winks. saying a few quick words of prayer (guidance) and assuming they are not in sight of the Earl-(we tied up in the captain’s stateroom) she has a proposal for the captured crew:
“Why say ye this job won’t be paying anything?” She smiles- “Ye seem like decent enough folk, caught up in this while trying to make an honest living- and I hate to see good sailors miss out on the chance to earn their keep at sea. To be sure, the nature of the job maybe changed a bit, but if yer willing to sail for a bit of coin, and yer open to sailing against the folk like yer Earl- , I am certain we can make it worth yer time. Tell the captain what the Earl was offering ye- perchance you can do a mite better?” (Here she pulls out a small handful of the treasure). “Of course we’d have to be certain we can trust ye if we do that way. Ye pledge to serve the captain’s and me orders and all that, on penalty of swimmin home or worse if ye cause troubles”.
Ash had finished and was proud of her work and went out to the others to wind it with a new song. Then she watched as Cassandra did her business and quietly sang the song she rewrote on the music box
"Hold on, you said someone was thrown overboard? Was that because of us or were you referring to a separate incident? You also said 'born and bred' not 'born and raised'. What do you mean by that?"
( I see we have some new players- welcome all!! DM- are they all on board the ship and were with us from the escape from port? We currently have two vessels, sailing towards an island, the crew and an Earl from our newly acquired ship are tied up, When it is time and you are ready, go ahead and introduce and describe your characters).

(Ooc: "Born and bred" is just a different way of saying "Born and raised". English can be weird sometimes, there's no difference, really.👍)
The Sailor nods toward the unconscious guard tied to the other mast:
"I said overboard because except for that fellow over there, the whole guard is now fishfood."

OOC- Ok thanks! Cassandra with the captain will see if we can convert the captured “regular sailors” to our cause, we will keep the remaining guard and the Earl captive, and just keep sailing on our course to get to a friendly port quickly. The next day, Cassandra will cast “Detect magic”, as a ritual( to save her spell slots), on the box, and while it is up will study the other things and people around her. Everyone on board with that plan? How many do we have to split our loot with?
OOC- Cassandra was not going to give them a full share. Commoners usually make a few copper to a few silver a day, so she was not thinking it would be a huge amount to buy their loyalty- if others don’t agree she will pay them out of her own wages . (Sorry just doing this OOC because faster!)

(Ooc: Sailors are more skilled than your average peasant, and they make a modest wage, which means anywhere from 61-300 Sp per month, which translates to about 1 Gp per day per sailor.)

OOC - how many captured crew are there (not counting the soldier and Earl). How many active PCs do we have on our boats? I know we lost A few players, and some have been pretty quiet. Speak up if you want loot!
Cassandra will propose to the Captain to pay the captured crew 2 gold per day, twice normal wages, plus a bonus at the end of their service if they are loyal.
she suggests to the Captain and our PC crew that the loot be split with a share for each of the boats (to buy armaments and help maintain) and then even shares all around the PC group. Thoughts?

"A very nice sword indeed."
Then, to the crimson crew:
"How loyal are you to the crimson empire?"
Farewell.
"Born and bred there, sir."
