A child-sized armored figure steps slowly up to the sign up table. Wordlessly, it signs the parchment for the competition.
Clad in rune covered black plate armor which is smoking as if it is on fire, visor down, you cannot tell what manner of creature this is. It carries a black shield with a grey mysterious symbol, a worn walking stick, and a rapier on one hip. A black leather pack is on it’s back, as If it is ready for a journey- not a gladiator match. Perched on the top of the pack, watching everyone hungrily, is a black owl with red eyes that glow with a fiendish energy.
A slender wood elf walks upto the signing table. Blasting its horn after it signs, as he has been known as "The horn" in the gladiator circuit for quiet some time.
Clearly a fighter through and through he wears his splint armor with pride. on his left you see a hand crossbow attached to his belt, while on the right a rapier can be seen in its scabbard. Putting his horn back on his back, and picking the crossbow from his side he is clearly ready to fight.

Roll a will save DC 16 to keep your wits or be stunned. As you grasp where you are a thick pea soup fog is being blown from the arena. As it dissipates you see your opponent across the arena.
(If you made your save you get a full round of prep actions. If not then it takes the prep round to recover. Roll for initiative and fight.)

The horrendous boom hits the elf hard, but his sturdiness over wins parts of it, shaking the boom from his body he gets ready to attack with his hand crossbow. aiming as a sharpshooter he shoots of three shots in quick succession (2 attacks per action, bonus action crossbow expert). After which he pushes himself beyond normal limits for two more quick shots (action surge additional attack action) At the first hit he looks very mad at the armor clad figure trying to frighten it (Menacing attack; Wis save DC 15). While his second hit is aimed to disarm the wizard (Disarming attack; Str save DC 15).

The first 3 bolts either miss or plunge harmlessly into the dark armor. The 4th bolt, about to plunge into the face of the black figure, is blocked by a sheild of force (Shield spell, reaction).
The final bolt plunges into the chest of the small figure, and you hear a gasp of pain.

I am unclear on the menacing attack damage, I only see it causes frighten. Also, can you explain how the bolts are doing their damage?

grasping at the bolt in it's chest, the small armored figure reels in obvous fear.- never has it seen such a display of crossbow mastery.
