The guards seem a bit confused by this... mostly because the stuff you're saying is above their pay grade. They tell you they need to check with the captain, and one of them runs off to fetch him.
He returns a short while later, accompanied by a half orc that's wearing splint mail armor and both a long and short sword at his side, as well as a heavy crossbow slung on his back. You recognize him from the gate yesterday... he was the one who was arguing with Zi Liang, and when she sees him, she begins to lay right into him with a stern voice, berating him for his lack of efforts to adequately improve Goldenfield's defenses after the last attack.
"I warned you that the last giant attack was not a solitary event, and that there would likely be more. Now we have seen yet another, and this time the ramifications proved to be much worse than the last one. Entire raiding parties of giants and other monsters, scaling our walls and terrorizing the town... This is where your lackluster response has gotten us! Were it not for these brave and talented adventurers, many more people would have died, while you were sleeping off too many rounds of Goldengulp. You owe them your gratitude, Strog Thunderblade, and you owe it to the town to listen to what they have to say."
Strog, who is clearly rattled, tries to remain calm as he does his best to brush off her verbal assault. "My guards fought bravely and they attacked the giants with many arrows and spears."
He then looks at you and says, "I am told that you captured this giant and that you want to give him special treatment. Convince me why I should listen to you, when he should be executed for his crimes committed to the people of Goldenfields."
Belkas gets to his feet, tired and sore, and looks at Capitan Strog. "You could kill this beast, and you would be more than justified. People would congratulate you, maybe even cheer you. You could slice its throat and let its blood water your fields in vengeance for the brothers and sisters, friends, and loved ones who have died today. The world will be a safer place for it, and you will all sleep better..." Belkas pauses to make sure that everyone is listening to him and, in a louder voice, says, "...until the next time giants from his village come looking for food or revenge. And next time, it may not be a handful of them; they could come in scores and wipe out this entire town and the crops that the whole region depends upon to avoid famine. A wise and farseeing Capitan, like yourself, would see that true safety comes, not from killing this one monster, guilty as it is, but in following it back to its village and ensuring that there will be no more attacks against the good people of Goldenfields."
Given the situation, and reading what Beklas said in his last post, we'll go with Deception.
Strog listen to your piece and answers with a somewhat lackadaisical tone in his deep, half orc voice. "So your idea is to follow this idiot giant and hope he leads you back to his village, upon which time you'll kill the rest of his big, idiot tribe? Sure. Whatever. Be my guest. For your efforts here today, I'll say you've earned the right to do what you will with him, and you've certainly proved that you can handle a few of these things. An entire village, though? Well... not really my concern once he's gone, and to be honest, gettin' him outta here makes things easier for me. I already got a handful o' giant and ogre carcasses to deal with, not ta' mention cleaning up all them goblins that's splattered all around the front gates."
"I'll assume that you'll want to get some rest and stock up on provisions before you leave. I'll have my guards to secure this one and keep him under watch until you're ready to go. I'll give you two days. That sound fair?"
“Thank you, that sounds fair” ( Arisa agrees the idea of bringing the fight to the giants sounds crazy, but this one did surrender, knew the way to the village, and might lead them to learn more about what was going on with the giants in general- all of this she will explain later)
she continues out loud.
“Hopefully the battle is over for today- but we fear a war is just beginning. I suggest you secure this place as best you can. We endeavor to use anything we can get out of this giant and his village to find what’s behind this- and stop it if we can. “
Belkas nods and says, "Thank you Capitan, and I believe we could all do with some rest and cleaning up. I do believe there were some goblin captives in the main square. They may also have some answers about these attacks."
(Belkas is interested in heading back to the inn, bathing his wounds, finding some breakfast, and then sleeping the day away. Afterwards, he still needs to find a 300 gp gem with tears in it for one of his new spells.)
Vernon is very much interested in completing the sleep that got interrupted. He can feel that he's a bit low on this burst power he's been throwing around.
Miros relinquishes Lob, the injured hill giant into custody of Captain Strog and his guards, and then along with, Zi Liang, Naxene, Oren, Shalvus and Elion, you all drag yourselves back to the center of town. When you pass the main square, you can see the slight charring and burn marks on the ground from Belkas's fireball, but thankfully, there's no real lasting damage to anything. By now, the goblin bodies that fell here, as well as the two captives, have been removed.
As you pass the road that leads over to the Abbey, Zi Liang parts ways with you here and says, "I will part ways with you here, for now, but after you're fed and rested, please come find me at the Abbey. There is something I would like to speak with you about, after I am rested as well. And I know that Father Darovik will want to meet you and thank you personally for your efforts to protect our temple farm."
"You are an impressive group, and I am honored to have fought alongside you during the defense of Goldenfields. May Chauntea grant favor upon you for your efforts."
With that, she nods to you and begins walking toward the abbey.
Miros leads you the rest of the way, and when you arrive at Northfurrow's End, he orders his staff to begin preparing and serving you all a very hearty brunch of ham, eggs, bread and butter, and a heaping basket of fresh fruit, as well as Goldengulp for anyone who wants it.
He says, "You're a fine bunch indeed, and brave as all get out! Especially you, master gnome! Tough as tiger claws! Never seen one of your kind so willing stand up to danger like you did today. You sure you're not part wolverine? You too, Zyllith. They never saw you comin' out there."
"And the rest o' you, with your magic... Naxene, you ever see anything like that out there today? Lobbin' giant fireballs and endless fire bolts like a group o' crazy conjurers!"
Naxene replies, as she tries to tidy her appearance a little bit, tucking away stray locks of hair back into her bun, and straightening her clothes. "I have indeed my friend. I've met some powerful mages, but they were not here today. Thankfully, you all were. Honestly, I don't know what we would have done if fate had not brought you to Goldenfields yesterday. Lady Laeral Silverhand will be pleased when she hears about your deeds here today."
After you have finished with your plentiful meal, that's Miros provides on the house, I'll assume that you all retire for a very long nap that lasts until the next morning. You wake to the crows of roosters, feeling rested and refreshed, and thankful that nothing disturbed you last night.
Arisa turns in after the meal, saying extensive prayers of thanks to Mystra prior to washing the soot and blood off of her and resting. She awakes in the morning refreshed, and saying her morning prayers she cleans and puts on her gear, brushing her long brown hair. Feeling whole, she comes down to breakfast and greet the others. “Well- what our the next steps?” She asks
Belkas tries to cast a spell, but he has no power. The giant looms above him, laughing, and Belkas runs, terror clutching his chest. He knows that just over the next hill is the city, and he will be safe there, but when he reaches the top, he sees the city in flames below. Giants crush buildings and tear people apart. His friends are down there; he can hear them fighting, but he knows they are doomed and has no way to help. He calls out to Glasya and begs her to help him. He feels her power flow into him, dark and sickly sweet. He surrenders himself to bloodlust and races down to join the battle. After a foggy blur of death, screams, and burning, Belkas comes back to himself to find himself alone in the destroyed husk of a city piled high with corpses. Realization hits him like a blow. They are all dead. All dead. It's all his fault.
Belkas wakes up with a start, covered with sweat, but feeling renewed. He washes his face in the water basin, letting the cold water wipe the last whisps of his nightmare from his mind. He greets Crowley, who is still preening over his role in the great battle, and then goes down to meet the others for breakfast.
In response to Arisa's question, he says, "I don't have much more I need to do in town. Perhaps we should go to the Abbey to see what Zi Liang would like to talk about."
After a hearty greeting from Miros and an equally hearty breakfast, you leave the inn, feeling very much rested, and you walk the short distance to the town square, and turn left to head towards the Abby, which is the largest and most elaborate building in Goldenfields, at least from what you've seen so far.
The outer walls of the centuries-old stone edifice have statues of Chauntea at every corner, her hands raised to the sky as though casting a spell to summon rain. Well-tended hedges surround the foundation, and a sun-shaped window of stained glass is set above the entrance and the steps leading up to it. Narrow windows of stained glass decorated with images of wheat, fruit, and vegetables light the pillared arcades within. Toward the back of the building, mounted between sturdy roof beams, is a large bronze bell that is rung fifteen minutes before prayers every morning, noon, and evening.
As you enter, you catch sight of two rather old black bears wandering the halls of the building. They hardly see to be a threat, as no one is paying any attention to them, save for the occasional pet of affection from some of the acolytes. When you enter, the both approach you in an obvious gesture of mooching any food you'll offer to them. Seeing them up close, you can see the signs of age in their faces and their slower gaits.
There are no guards in the abbey, just a handful of acolytes, including Zi Liang, and a few people left over from this morning's prayer service. Zi Laing comes over to greet you, and she intrudes you to Father Ellardin Darovi, The Abbot of Goldenfields. He has just finished the 9 bell morning service, and greets you with a warm, but somewhat reserved tone.
"Welcome to the Abbey. This is a safe space for all. I understand that we have you to thank for your service in helping to protect our temple farm. For that I am grateful, as is the Earth Mother herself. I hope that you are all ok after the battle. Do let me know if any of you need any kind of healing."
"Zi Laing has spoken of your deeds and I must say, I am quite impressed. We could always use more people like you, people who would help provide opposition to those forces that threaten the natural balance of the world. Coexisting in the world with giants and other wild and even dangerous creatures is one thing, but they cannot be allowed to destroy our civilization, just as we should not destroy the wild beauty of nature, however, dangerous it may be."
"Tell me, good folk, are you familiar with The Emerald Enclave?"
((You can all roll a History check to see if this name means anything to you. Or, if you wish, you can decide that some aspect of your character's background might include knowledge of, or even some level of experience with this group.))
“Thank you for showing us this place, it is beautiful. I’ve heard they are a group that protects the wild lands, my mother used to talk about them. She was an herbalist who knew some people who were members, at least I think they were. But I’m afraid I don’t know much more about them”
Belkas nods respectfully to the Abbott. "Thank you for welcoming us to the Abbey and for the warm hospitality we have received since our arrival at Goldenfields. It is a beautiful town with kind and valient inhabitants. I have not heard of this Enclave before. Are they connected somehow to this latest attack, or would they be of some aid in understanding why the giants are rampant throughout the countryside?"
Zyllith would have no reason to know about the Emerald Enclave, and given how the others spoke of them, they clearly weren't the sort to mix with the company of pirates like she had.
"Them folk are total mystery ta' me. Perhaps ye'd be so kind as ta' explain who they be, an' how they might be helpin' on these matters?"
Both Arisa and Vernon have indeed heard of the Emerald Enclave. They're one of the many groups of like minded people that seek to exert their influence throughout Faerûn, some on a local level, others on a much wider scale. Many of these factions and organizations operate secretly throughout the land, while others simply offer people a way to form connections with people who share similar values and ideas across the world.
As Father Darovi explains, some of what he says ring with some sense of familiarity to Arisa and Vernon. Arisa, in particular, realizes that her mother was probably more involved in this group than she ever knew.
"The Emerald Enclave seeks to maintain balance in the natural order, and keep the elemental forces fo the world in check, while combating the forces that threaten this tenuous balance that keep the world from collapsing. We also help other survive the many perils that are ever present in the wild. There are many dangers in the world, and we simply want to help others survive. I'd say that we're a rather loose organization; a number of the clergy here are members, but many wander the wilds in isolation, depending on themselves, while still dedicated to offering help when needed."
"As those who played a significant role in helping to defend Goldenfields from the attack yesterday, you have shown that you share these same basic tenants. At the very least, you have proven your mettle and have earned the gratitude of myself, as well as that of other members who fought alongside you. That's right, Miros is one of our most staunch supporters, as is the awakened tree, Lifferlas. There are many of us here in Goldenfields, and many more that room the wilds outside of these walls."
"For this, know that you have gained new allies in your cause. Zi Liang tells me that you are to continue your quest to root out the source of these giant attacks and hopefully prevent more from occurring. If this is true, then you can count on the assistance of our members, and if you wish, I would present you with our insignia that will help you identify other members of the enclave during your travels."
"Is this something that interests you? If so, then I would welcome you as new recruits to our organization."
"As a Knight of Myth Drannor and adherent of Mielikki, our goals here align. I would be honored to bear the insignia of the Emerald Enclave wherever this quest may take us!"
“My mother spoke highly of the Emerald Enclave, and I understand some of the priesthood of Mystra are members. I also would be honored to join and help with this cause” says Arisa.
