Ressys stands at the edge of the plank and at the words of Qidira moves closer to her. He holds the torch high as he listens to her words. He peers that direction, to the south where the humanoids are, but he can't see far enough to make out who she is talking about. At the same time a splash is heard behind him and he turns just in time to see Durnham coming back to the surface. Unable to see the humanoids Qudira warned about he goes back to the pool and reaches a hand out to Durnham to help him up onto their side of the pool.
"There are people deeper into the caves. Get over here. Likely they are the bandits with Hulil." he calls to the others. He also keeps an eye out for the frogs to see if they were going to leave them alone.
As Durnham slips off the plank and into the water the thought flashes through his head“Of Course, if there’s ever a way to make a total idiot of yourself, I’ll find a way to do it!”The thought Is washed away as the icy water envelopes him. Surprisingly, however, he manages to recover quickly and returns to the surface. He looks around and immediately notices the silence.
Durnham looks from one side to the other but quickly decides to go for Winterwalker’s outstretched hand. He awkwardly swims as fast as he can using all haste to reach that hand hoping he can get out before those frogs catch up. Action Dash!
Inside his mind images and words from his studies intrude on his thoughts. Hellish demon frogs from the abyss dominate his thoughts and he reminds himself over and over. They’re just normal frogs, they’re just normal frogs!
Qidira calls out to the others, "The frogs are there, and there!"She says pointing at the location of the giant frogs. Seeing the large amphibians headed for her new friend, she launches two regular daggers at the frog closest to Durnham.
Regular dagger 1 : Attack: 14 Damage: 5
Regular dagger 2 : Attack: 19 Damage: 3
Sneak attack 1d6 if its within 5' which she will hold for a little to take advantage of. 1
Brandon notices the sudden silence of the frogs as Durnham splashes toward the far shore and hears Ressys warnings of possible bandits ahead. He lost sight of the frogs, but knows they are there. He nods to Kotar “You should cross first, I can cover you from here.”
Dark shadows and green energy swirl around his hand as he makes ready an Eldritch Blast that he will release at any frog attacking one of the party.
Durnham is fastest to react, despite (or perhaps because of) the freezing water. He splashes to the southern coast as fast as he can where Ressys pulls him up onto the bank. Now able to see further into the cave, right at the limits of his dark vision to the south he can make out the figure moving around with some urgency.
Brandonstands ready to attack any frog that attacks one of the group, indicating to Kotar that he should cross next.
Qidira scans the water carefully, tracking the frogs. She spots that the one to the west is nearest to Durnham as he tries to escape and launches both daggers into the water. They seem to both connect, sticking into the frog’s side and starting a slow release of cloudy blood into the water.
Ressys, having just helped the soaking Durnham to shore, can see that the frogs are moving in a manner which, in his experience, is aggressive for amphibians.
@Ressys, Qidira and Durnham:
The humanoid jogs towards you – no, there are three now! Half-crouched as if advancing to battle, or at least the unknown. They appear armed but it is hard to make out what with. They look like elves, lightly armoured.
A voice calls out from the south in Common, accented like a native of the North, “You picked the wrong cave to poke around in! Taste steel and blood!”
A trio of crossbow bolts fly towards your position, targeting Qidira, Durnham and Ressys (one each)
Attack on Qidira Attack: 9 Damage: 3 piercing
Attack on Durnham Attack: 21 Damage: 8 piercing
Attack on Ressys Attack: 7 Damage: 7 piercing
Qidira is struck in the thigh, Ressys in the shoulder - but Durnham gets a close call as the bolt aimed for his head whistles past his ear and shatters against the cave wall.
Kotar watched in terror as Durnham fell to the murky waters dividing the cave. His first impulse was to run to the dwarf, pull him from the pool, but then he remembered the wizards own words. The improvised bridge would hardly be able to hold under the weight of two creatures, especially if one of them is as large and heavy as a goliath. Bloody Hells, he cursed with the voice of his mind, accepting the fact that he wouldn’t be able to help his friend.
The second thought to cross his mind was to draw his blade. He was no Druid, but even him knew how an animal reacted when something entered their territory - a battle was about to happen. But could he even reach the beasts? I swear I’ll buy a glaive.
Before he could make a decision Brandon told him to cross. The fighter understood that the warlock had means to attack at range and focused his attention on the frogs and any attacks they might send his way, preparing to dodge, and crossed the plank only to find a trio of humanoids engaged to the rest of his friends. Ressys and Qidira seemed to have sustained some injury. And to think that things were going so well but moments ago. Now they could have to battle until death with the bandits. Well, they would certainly reach the items from Eiselcross that way.
“Not poking! Tulgi sent us!” He yelled at the trio. “To speak with Hulil!”
Notes:
Kotar takes the Dodge action and uses his movement to cross the plank.
As Winterwalker helps Durnham out of the icy water he begins shaking and his teeth start chattering. He turns towards the Druid to thank him but is interrupted by shouts to the south. His eyes widen as the bolt appears in Ressy’s shoulder, redness begins spreading out from that point. Before he can respond, however, another bolt whistles past his head and Durnham ducks his head reflexively... many seconds after the fact and far too late to actually do anything.
Thankful that Winterwalker still has a torch, Durnham drops his soaking and useless torch on the ground. He lifts his staff parallel to the ground and points it towards the nearest humanoid figure and says “Flambé!” As he says the arcane word, the tip of the staff glows a dark red and a small swirling ball of fire forms and then shoots off towards the humanoid. Casting firebolt 12 to hit , 6 Damage
He then moves to the East and tries to get into the mouth of the other passage and out of the line of sight of the humanoids.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ressys grunts in pain as the bolt bites into his shoulder but he is able to maintain a grip on the torch. In his other hand a flickering flame appears Produce Flameand he throws it at the same person Durnham attacked
Attack: 6 Damage: 1
Right after this the Firbolg, with a twitch of his ears, suddenly turns invisible (Bonus Action - Hidden Step) and then moves south 5 feet into the small curve of rock.
Qidira winces in pain as the crossbow bolt strikes her thigh. She keeps her back to the cave wall hoping the other two can convince the humanoids. She draws her last remaining regular daggers and launches them at the frog again.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kotar starts to cross the plank but almost immediately loses his footing and plunges into the cold dark water. He surfaces with a gasp, impervious to the cold but shocked by the fall slightly.
One frog darts through the water and tries to bite Kotar, the other attacks Brandon from within the water
Attack on Kotar Attack: 16 Damage: 4
Attack on Brandon Attack: 8 Damage: 5
Kotar manages to fend off his amphibian attacker, while Brandon can thank the Druvenlodian steel in his armour for rendering the frog's bite ineffective.
Durnham unleashes a bolt of fire into the advancing elves and catches one square in the chest, who howls in pain. The dwarf wizard then hurries past Ressys into the east cave. The floor is slick underfoot, but not dangerously so. the larger concern is the smell, offensively potent guano scents assault Durnham’s nose and nearly cause him to gag, until he notices that the ceiling is crawling with bats and they are rousing to defend their territory. As one swarm they drop to attack him.
As Kotar splashes into the water drawing the attention of one of the frogs, Brandon uses his reaction to release the built up energy of his Eldritch Blast at the frog.
Ready action from last turn, posted in post#206
Fending off an attack of his own by the second frog, Brandon draws his longsword and slashes down at the beast, trying to drive it away.
Brandonbrings his blade down onto the wounded frog, injuring it even further; the creature looks like it is getting ready to turn and dive away.
Qidira’s daggers fly true and stick deep into the hide of the frog that is fighting Kotar. With a final croak the creature goes limp and starts to bob on the surface harmlessly.
Ressys hurls a ball of flame at the advancing elves but the mote flies high into the darkness, briefly throwing shadows around the cave, before dissipating harmlessly. The firbolg then seems to shimmer into nothingness and disappears.
The three elvescontinue their advance north towards you, brandishing scimitars as they arrive at the southern bank of the pool. One tries to grapple Qidira (roll Athletics or Acrobatics, your choice, and beat 7 to resist).
The lead elf, standing on the plank's southern end just om the bank, shouts around the chamber to all of you "Drop your weapons and we'll call off the frogs! If not, we kill the weird-looking halfling"
The third elf (OOC: SE of Qidira) appears heady to skewer her with his scimitar.
Durnham recoils from the swarm of bats... or maybe it’s the smell! He lets out a loud grunt or growl of anger and frustration. “Uhhhh... little help here!! Bats!!”
He curses himself for walking into another enemy. His first thought is to flee but realizes the frogs are attacking his friends behind him and his friends are facing those elves just a few feet away... there is no escape.
“There you go again making a fool of yourself because you didn’t know what was down this tunnel,”He thinks to himself before making his decision.
Durnham grounds the end of his staff into the cave floor and holds the staff in front of him, closes his eyes and says “Arcane Rocket!” and the top of his staff glows bright red as he lifts the staff from the ground and twirls it to point behind him at the frog near Brandon then twirls it around to point at the bats.
Action: Casts Magic Missle 1 bolt towards the frog behind him fighting Brandon 2 Force damage and 2 into the swarm of bats in front of him 55 force damage. 3 glowing red arrows fly true towards their marks.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
