This particular door appears to be locked. A DC15 Dex check would be required to open it. Any sort of lockpicking tools will give advantage to the roll.

"Mal? Go ahead," Bree says.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
The door opens to, at first, darkness. The air in here is moist and sticky. Natural light spills from cracks in the ceiling, and mud coasts the floor. Stone workbenches and laden with clay bottle of various shapes and sizes. Toadstool, snakeroot, and belladonna plants grow everywhere among the clutter, fed by water seeping from above. Standing near the plants is a hairless man with scaly skin and a bronze syringe. Lurking around the distillery are five slouching humans that reek of decay.
There are bottles everywhere, along with fermenting equipment scattered all over the room. It looks chemically dangerous in here. Be careful.
"Ahhhh.." Xopal says, turning to you all from the other side of the room, "More tesssssssst ssssssubjects...."
Keep in mind what a large explosion may do. It's possible an explosion of that magnitude could alert others. And we all know what happens to you all in a ********. =P But hey, who am I to limit what you all can do. =)
He doesn't seem to consider you a threat. If you wish to attack, roll initiative. Once you roll initiative, I will roll as well, and we will consider combat to have begun. The room is about 40 across and 60 feet deep.
Ah, Grishkar. If only we could understand the eternity of imprisonment he suffers from. For now.
Bree
She's still a little woozy and goes along with the party back down (following the slaves) to boats, then turning to go up the doorway passage.

(Sorry for being absent for most of the day.)
"I mean I'm no thief but sure I'll give it a shot." Mal is first going to check for traps.
Investigation:1
Then he tries to pick the lock.
Dex Check:7
Mal frowns at his failure. He turns to the others and shrugs.
"Nah, doesn't open for me. Maybe one of those guys has a key?"
Clayton will take a crack at the door, “C’mon...” 6, “Doggonit. Anyone else?”

Dec check with guidance 5
Oh for Gods sake you guys LOL.
Ok, the nat 1 makes enough noise that someone, on the other side, hears your attempts to open the door.
The doors slowly open...

POISONMASTER XOPAL AND THE VENOM DISTILLERY
The door opens to, at first, darkness. The air in here is moist and sticky. Natural light spills from cracks in the ceiling, and mud coasts the floor. "Ahhhh.." Xopal says, turning to you all from the other side of the room, "More tesssssssst ssssssubjects...."
Mal leans back and whispers real quietly to Bree.
"Chuck a fireball and I'll shut the door."
Keep in mind what a large explosion may do. It's possible an explosion of that magnitude could alert others. And we all know what happens to you all in a ********. =P But hey, who am I to limit what you all can do. =)
OOC > My kingdom for Clayton having Silence. Alas, i think he does not. (Edit, because he's not a cleric or a bard, duh.)
Who can act in what order? Does Xopal have the drop on us, or are we rolling initiative?

Clayton eyes him up, “Afraid not, bucko. This is a stick up. Tie you and your... friends(?) up, and we can discuss the terms of your surrender.”

"Surrender?" Xopal muses. "You are just in time to witness the evolution of the yuan-ti." He turns and speaks to the zombies. "Bring them to me."
The zombies slowly lumber toward you all. You can see on the other side of the room, a passageway leads out of the room to another area.
“Shagambi wasn’t for surrender anyway.” Clayton will make an attack action against Xopal. Attack: 14 Damage: 12 magic slashing, Attack: 13 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll. magic slashing, Attack: 19 Damage: 10 magic slashing.
Clayton was hoping to strike him before Initiative, but if it is needed, 20.
