Rocky slowly backs out and heads back to the others while whispering, " Neat trick lad, half dozen with pets, one possible leader, no camp. heading back. " Taking his time, and keeping a sharp ear on if the small pact moves, Rocky taking his time gets back to the others, and tells them in a low voice what he has seen.
" Too few numbers to be da main pact, but fits what ol' Ivtan said he had seen the night of da field burnin'. "
( OCC: did rocky notice if the one barking orders had a messed up eye? )
Rocky - The one that was giving orders and wearing more armor had an eye that had scabs around it and was heavily infected (it was unclear as to whether or not it still had the eye, but it had certainly been stabbed there).
Nevaeh - The gnoll thinks for a little bit before saying as best as he can: "I am Unuuk."
Sigi had been looking for a place near the field to settle in for the night, hopeful that the lack of attack might mean he could slip in a long rest and pray for the tongues spell for the morning. Hearing the gnoll's words - that a large attack was imminent - he instead moves back toward the rest of their group to take a quick roll.
"Who is still here with us? If our... new friend..." he looks to the gnoll and tries his best to smile politely, "... is correct then a large attack is on its way. I can hold my own on the front lines of a fight though I am better at taking hits than dishing them out. But Sothel grants me the power to heal others who have taken blows in battle." He looks to the assembles others. "We should decide how best to position ourselves to protect the weakest of us from direct threats. Unuuk... when they come, from which direction will they strike? How long do we have?"

Braci thinks carefully, "If their numbers are small then perhaps we stand a chance at defeating them. "Let me stand to the front and talk. If they push forward I'll compelled their leader to fight me and show them that they shouldn't continue their attack," Kairynna says as her hand falls to her rapier. It is still in it's sheath with a clasp holding it in. Taking a few deep breathes. She stands that the edge of the field where she thinks the gnolls are coming from and waits.
Rocky thinks about what Braci is suggesting, it would three to one as far as the numbers go. With no real idea of the strength of this pacts leader, not to mention these beast may decide to focus their full attention on one of the three of this small group, if one goes down quickly then all may be lost.
As much as they have the element of surprise, the numbers tell rocky it would be best to ether head back and get more help, or keep their distance from these gnolls and see what they do. Hell the gnolls may very well know of the large group of people who were hired to guard the field, and the wagon was just a way to lure them away.
in a low voice, just above a whisper : " Lads, I hate to say it, but runnin away to fight another day may be da better option. Should one of us capable three fall, all would be lost. Ether we all head back and inform da others, or keep a distance from dis pact and watch them. If they are the ones that are burnin da fields, and planin an attack tonite, trailin dem might help in any fight that might break out. "
Varis compares notes of what he viewed through the eyes of his Owl with Uraim. “Yes, not enough for a full pack, but more than we can handle on our own. I believe our best bet is to return to the others and warn them of what we saw. I fear that if we try to follow, we will either be discovered or lose them and arrive too late to be of any assistance. What say you two?”
quietly Uraim quips , " I say we best be getting back, can't get paid if yer dead. " Of course, it's not all about the money. Lady Lonvess let this mess get out of hand, and everyone else will have to clean it up. Ether she's incompetent, or someone wants her out the way, and dying before anyone can figure it out wouldn't help the people of the town.
" Let's make haste, the quicker and quieter the better. " Rocky then starts heading back slowly and quietly to the other group at the fields, and as soon as he feels he is far enough away from the gnoll pact, begins to hustle as quickly as his legs will carry him. Hopefully, this small party can return with what they have discovered.
Stealth : 25 to back off the pack enough to start haulin back to the rest of the party.
Braci learned to trust dwarves in the matter of war long ago. He looks towards the group and nods, "If you say it's not time then we wait. Let us make haste." He pulls his up and starts moving back with the others.

Varis nods to the others, directs his owl to keep an eye on the gnolls in the clearing, and sets out after Braci and Uraim. Like the others, he attempts to move silently until they are far enough away from the clearing to avoid detection.
Rocky, Varis, and Braci - You sneak away from the clearing and reach the road when you see the sun finally go down and you hear a creature (in the direction of the clearing) start a sort of howl (at a low pitch and then rising in pitch and volume, it sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxDnkB9LLGI ). Then, it is matched by a similar sound far to the right and far behind you. You can all (including the group at the fields) hear the calls but the group at the fields doesn't hear the one in the clearing (that Varis, Rocky, and Braci saw). Anyone that hears it can make a Nature check to identify its meaning.
At the moment, the group that was scouting is standing in the middle of the road that is about 2 miles away from the field as you hear rustling as the gnolls from the clearing approach the fields. You three have probably a minute before they reach you.
The group at the fields knows only that gnolls are approaching from the East and the West, that the scouting group hasn't come back yet, and that it is sundown (when Unuuk said the gnolls would attack).
At that instant, Rocky figures the race to the field is on, and with his adrenaline pumping starts with " Lads time to haul but back to the field as fast as you can. "
Using all that he has to run as fast has he can next to any cover that is near the road ( action dash and bonus action dash for 75ft of hualing a** dwarf ) pacing himself as to not get exhausted.
So two possibilities:
1) the scouting party makes it back to the fields just before the gnolls, and Rocky picks a reasonable hiding spot and gets his shortbow ready to start what he calls "hide and go tag".
2) the gnolls the scouting party discovered start overtaking them and rocky sticks next to any cover on the side the road, because he has a ring of free movement and difficult terrain does not slow him down. If the gnolls get to within 120ft before rocky makes it to the fields he will decide to start heading deeper into cover and hide to let the gnolls pass. Then start to attack from the rear, again playing "hide and go tag"
Stealth if needed : 25
If the scouting party makes it back with a bit of time, rocky will yell: " It'sa ambush, watch yer rear! " and proceed as stated.
Braci looks at his new companions, "This is trouble we must move quickly."Seeing Rocky take off so quickly Braci does the same using everything he has to return to the field as fast as he can, he no longer has any concern for hiding, just getting back and protecting the fields... and the others...

The hairs on the back of Varis’ neck stand up when he hears the howls. It sounds familiar, and he tries to place it. Nature 22
Seeing Braci and Uraim take off running toward the others remaining in the field, he follows, moving quickly and soon overtaking both of them. He moves with all of his speed to meet up with the larger group and warn them of what they have discovered. He sends his owl to watch the path behind him and to provide warning if the Gnolls are about to overtake them.
Movement with Dash is 120ft. (OOC: You don’t have to outrun the Gnolls, just the Dwarf) If they are about to be overrun, Varis will attempt to hide as well to position for an attack from behind.
(OOC: At the field, the group there has remained on the east side of the fields, yes?)
Hearing the howls, coming as they are from east and west, Sigi's stomach knots. Sothel, guide us through this.
He looks again at the defenders of Aoswell: 2 healers; 2 pacifists; a swordsman; a bard; and a gnoll who's trustworthiness is less than.... No matter. It will be enough. It must be.
"Friends, the moment of truth is upon us. They come at us from both sides and we must not let the field burn. Kairynna and Neveah, I presume you remain steadfast in your pursuit of peace? If that is the case, I doubt the presence of a defector from the gnoll's cause will put them in the mood to parley. Unuuk, will you come with me to the West?" He motions with his arm as if to say 'follow me' in case the gnoll doesn't understand. "Mori, will you join us as well? Even if fighting isn't your game I could use an extra set of eyes with me... in case any torches or flaming arrows hit the fields while I am locked up with foes...." And an extra set of eyes in case our toothy friend looks to stab me in the back, he thinks but does not say. "Thoradin, can you provide support to both sides? East or West depending upon who fares better?"
(OOC: That would leave Sigi, Unuuk, and Mori in the West, and Kairynna, Neveah, and Tayvello in the East, with Thoradin lurking in-between prepared to assist whichever side needs him. Does that sound agreeable? I'm not in charge here so I'm just throwing this out as a suggestion.).
"We don't know what's become of our allies. They may be dead, fighting for their lives, or about to ride in to save our bacon. But for now we need to prepare as though we are the only defense Aoswell has tonight!"
If he gets agreement, and it looks like the gnoll is following, Sigi will charge off West to the side of the field closest to where that howling is coming from.
