Marlyth suggests that the party should obtain some Axe Beaks for travel so that these beasts can be used for riding or attached to a Carriage or Chariot. She seems quite confident about the upcoming travel through difficult terrain since the 'Land's Stride'and 'Natural Explorer'features will grant her party certain benefits.
"If you want me to propel the carriage or chariot, I will volunteer to do so willingly. I have proficiency in navigating such kind of vehicle since I always take the responsibility of the travelling arrangement of my tribal kin."
Marlyth: I'm interpreting this natural explorer feature to apply as if you had asked, I would have suggested you pick MARSHLAND as most of the campaign takes place in the moors and I further rule that it bypasses the usual -5 to passive perception accompanying fast travel.
The sled/boat/barge (whatever you call it - its versatile) makes it look like you have a good amount of stuff - that's why the trolls choose to ambush you. If you travelled light, they likely would not)
Axebeaks are 50gp each, you can tell me what the thing they're pulling is and price it accordingly. I wouldn't worry about the prices too much as you've found some treasure and its easily tradeable. I haven't kept track of the value of these items because there's not too much equipment you'll find overly expensive, but we can go back and calculate it if we want to buy some big ticket items.
<Having walked through wetlands I can safely say IRL this would not work, however - there is nothing in the game that suggests it wouldn't and several points supoorting the proposition that it does. Therefore...>
The crew pulls a boat drawn by a pair of axebeaks moving easily over the marshes making the trip with incredible ease and speed. Moving at a fast pace, their attention to detail is slightly hampered, which plays right into the hands of the pair of trolls who wait to ambush travelers through the marsh foolish enough to stray away from the river.
Tabaqui, Marlyth and Safeguard see them start to move as they ready their attack. They act on round 1, the rest of the party can act on round 2. The trolls make no attempt to board the vesesel
Marlyth attempts to intercept the attack on the first Axe Beak by smashing the claw of the first Troll with her Quarterstaff, then she will enchant the weapon by casting Shillelaghon the wooden staff and dismount.
"Hold on, Pinocchio! We will beat these Trolls together, and offer their blood to the spirits of the nature."
The country of my residence has Salt Marshlands near the Coastal Area, so is it possible to apply the mechanism of the concept? 'Natural Explorer' feature
I've been keeping track of the inventory items, 6 books (25×6) gp, Golden Disk (250 gp), 'Simply Mythology' (200 gp), 4th Level Spell Scroll. All of the books collected from the Barrow have been sold, it covers the payment of an Axe Beak, a Studded Leather and Herbs. No land vehicle.

<I'm saying Marlyth 's natural explorer applies. That's why she's not surprised round 1. You guys can borrow the boat from the dwarf. Just try to bring it back to him. He's asking you to do the dangerous thing. He might just write it off if you come back without it.>
Troll initiatives: 15
<Axe beaks have pp 10. They're surprised in round 1.>
Tabaqui's arrow pierces a troll right in the left eye. He screams a gutteral trilling sound as he grabs the feathered shaft and tears it from his skull, pulling the eye out with it as a trickle of mossy-hued viscous vitriol* trickles from the empty socket. dripping from the tip of the giants warty bulbous proboscis.
<We may have lost Safeguard. If not, he's welcome to rejoin anytime, but I'll be running the encounters as if there are 5 PCs until I hear otherwise. I havent heard anything; it's just inference.>
Angus' sword swipes at the injured troll (1), taking a chunk of one ear clear off is head.
Calner's summoned Slaad ... (they're probably within 15 ft, but on opposite sides of the sledge the axebeaks are hauling your stuff on. I'm guesssing the summons wont be in the boat, so we'll treat as if more than 15ft apart.) slashes at the troll thant attacked Calner (2). The troll uncertain what he's looking at is unable to block the first hit, but manages to defend against the second. <What color Slaad? also, do you actually have this: platinum-inlaid vial worth at least 400 gp? This is actually a major effect here, so I'll be enforcing the requirement if necessary. I know we started at level 9, so don't worry about the how, just the cost.>
Tabaqui looses another arrow, devesating the surprisingly resilient troll who seems to have a small yellowish pebble now in the recently vacant eye socket from which he removed a previous arrow.

Troll 2
Bite. x Slaad 19 for 10 piercing damage.
Claw. x Slaad 9 for 9 slashing damage.

Troll 1

Claw x Tabqui.12 for 9 slashing damage.
Bite x 1st Tabaqui.13 for 10 piercing damage.
Axebeak 1 falls to the ground, axebeak 2 is freaking out, warbling like a distressed turkey as it flails its neck as he attempts to run, straining against the harness he wears but realizes the boat is too heavy with everyone still on it for him to pull by himself.
<Marlyth, why don't you go ahead and control the Axebeak. They're up, then you and if he shows up, Safeguard, then back to Wen at the top of the order.>
<<I literally just posted that; it's not even edited! How in the world does it have 'potentially manipulated die rolls'? >>
<All the attacks would hit the Slaad (if it's there - Looking at the char. sheet, I see 15gp.) and it would still be up either way, but is it a 4th or 5th level summoning? >
Tabaqui uses his uncanny dodge reaction to escape some of the damage, reducing it to 15 total.
(trying to visualize this... the troll that was wounded by Tabaqui had Weneon and Angus standing by it, while T fired a shortbow at range. To get to melee with T, wouldn't the troll have to take opportunity attacks from Weneon and Angus?)

Marlyth will remove the harness from the neck of the second Axe Beak 'Pistachio' in order to set him free and let him attack freely (preferably the second Troll), but she will not attempt to mount the vehicle.

<I don't know. You're all on a a boat or potentially jumping off of it in waist deep water. Tje whole boat is pretty cramped as there are 5 or 6 of you. If I tried to put it on map I think it would look like a half carton of eggs. The most likely answer to your question is either a) Tabaquu was at DA for a ranged attack because the troll was within 5ft of him or b) the troll had cover because an ally was between the troll.amd Tabaqui. For pbp I generally prefer totm. It does somewhat reduce tactical complexity. For a scene like this it seems like the right choice - and agrees with my general thinking about combat - its more of a problem or a puzzle than just a bunch of math rocks.>
To that end I'm going to update Calner with the following details: I realize that, at starting over 4th level, you should have all had more gold than the base level indicated under normal character creation guidelines. Thus, not only should Calner have enough gp to buy the component needed, you should all have more than enough funds to secure the boat and probably several other things as well.
Everyone should have started with 500gp +1d10x25.
This was an oversight on my part. Please, update character sheets accordingly when you get a chance. If you have a need for any additional equipment that was unavailable due ro.economoc reasons. Go ahead and add that as well - but ask if it's something exotic>

(Marlyth's Turn)
Marlyth will cast Hunter's Mark on the second Troll in order to magically mark the creature as her quarry. Then she will use her Quarterstaff to attack the same creature while attempting to smash its head; tiny wisps of shrubs and fragrant petals of flowers appear at the site of impact.
Action: Quarterstaff [Shillelagh]: Attack: 16 Damage: 3 + 4 from Hunter's Mark
(@Wile_E_Coyote, I've added the starting gold pieces and reduced the price of a Rowboat, a pair of Axe Beaks and a pair of Bit and Bridle from the total amount.)

(Yeah, I get that grids and specific movement tactics don't work well in Pbp. On the other hand, certain characters are designed to stand in front and take the hits, and others tend to hang back and use ranged attacks to avoid being in the reach of the bad guys. I think it's unlikely T would leave himself exposed in melee range, he probably stood and fired from his position in the boat, or else jumped to the side, but not right next to the troll, who was attacking the axe beaks at the front of the boat. He would have seen the characters already engaged in melee as a buffer. *shrug*)
Round 3
Finding himself in melee combat, Tabaqui will drop the shortbow, and draw his rapier, aiming to create a new orifice between the troll's ribs.
<Having walked through wetlands I can safely say IRL this would not work, however - there is nothing in the game that suggests it wouldn't and several points supoorting the proposition that it does. Therefore...>
