The whole situation was a fiasco but it definitely didn't end as badly as she was worried it might. As soon as the guard stated that the persistent woman was a fellow guard's mother she wanted to facepalm but just barely kept it together. Letting out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding after Arjun bribed the guard, the wizard ran a hand through her brightly colored hair. "Magnificent Mystra that was...close." Nodding in response to the half orc's comment about getting his money back. "You are...correct. And that seems reasonable."
Lagging behind the others in favor of joining the trailing Thom, Mara stared at their feet as they walked through the dark streets, quiet for a time before voicing her thoughts quietly, "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you earlier." She was quiet for a beat or two longer before asking, "What would you have done if he tried to arrest us?" Not being able to picture the very straight laced man opposing the law.
It wasn't long before what the rest of the party was speaking of began to sink in and she met Thom's eyes with her own wide green. Jogging with her shorter legs in order to catch up to Bryson's elbow the woman piped up, "It doesn't necessarily need to come to that though Mister...Bryson, was it? We're looking for the same book for the same reason as you. Though I don't believe any of us have ever had the privilege of having been to the Citadel of Books yet however. We're on a job, and going to Candlekeep to access a specific bit of information is part of it. Finding The Sundering was just the closest means to accomplishing it. But we have it on good authority that there's another book and if you were to join us, you should be able to gain entry with us. Assuming it's okay with our employer. There was one more slot left for someone to join, wasn't there?" Glancing between Oberyos and Brandon for confirmation.
"Mara I don't know what I would have done. I have..." Thom trails off in thought of what to share and what not to share. "I am not a perfect man, and I have been... in trouble before, the results were not good, what so ever, I do not wish to be there again." Thom stops as a thought comes to his brain,"Truthfully, we were told that any expese to get going would be paid?" Thom's voice would be soft and some what shameful. "Not that any of that matters now, onward." A moment of silence pases before Mara sprints ahead, just in time for Thom to not say something stupid.

The night has remained mild and though dark, the moon and streetlights combine to illuminate the city in a more attractive light, hiding much of the detritus and wear in these poorer and more functional regions. Occasionally people pass you by in ones and twos, some strolling happily and others seeming to scurry between the city's warren of streets.
Brandon seems to have remembered much of the route, his false scares along the way seem to have given him an excellent recollection of the landmarks that you all passed. The smaller streets and dim alleys turn into well lit main thoroughfares, and the journey takes less time than your travel to the Paper Wyrm. There is a feeling of despondency about the group that the first and closest lead for their entry fee into CandleKeep has returned nothing. Though Mara probably wasn't alone in her feelings that the whole affair could have turned out worse.
You turn off the main cobbled road into the dim light of the partially lit, narrower streets and are now only a short distance from the Faun. Your hope that like all good taverns, the doors aren't locked to paying residents regardless of the hour. As the party and Bryson are discussing their shared interests and the future possibilities, their attention drifts a little.
Your talk is interrupted by the familiar 'twang...twang' as two crossbow bolts fly at the group from different directions...
Xbow 1 - 9 @ 3 for 10 Xbow 2 - 12 @ 2 for 6
Brandon flinches as the first bolt ricochets off the cobbles in front of him, and a second catches his armor on the shoulder and deflects harmlessly away from the others in the group with it's shaft broken, pieces fly off upwards and towards the wall.
A voice calls out from up the alley, "You should have left the contract for us, now we'll be having your gold, and your finery... Oh, and your lives."
The street is about 15 feet wide, and you are next to one of several lamps that glow dimly, making you easier targets for your assailants. The group are about 30 feet into the street and about the same distance ahead are a stack of crates leaning up against the left side building. Walls and buildings line both sides of the street, the walls around 5-6 feet high and the buildings a standard two storey affair (roughly 20 feet) One crossbow bolt came from the rooftop of the building to the left, and one from further down the street. The voice also sounds like it is ahead of you.
Does Thom see a way up to the roof top? Would the crates be high enough to get me up to the roof top? I would use my action to dash as I am sure that is what would be needed.
(OoC) The crates are about 4ft each, stacked into convenient steps that reach to 12ft high and with a jump would be able to grant you access to the roof. You can make it in a dash, but I'll need an athletics or acrobatics check for you to make it up there.

Oberyos will move 30' down the street, to get next to those crates. That should provide cover against attacks from further down the street.
His action is to Ready the spell Acid Splash, which will be cast at the rooftop crossbow shooter when they try to shoot us again. (I'm assuming they have to become visible when leaning over the roof edge to attack again.) DEX save vs. DC 13, or take 1 acid damage.

Thom and Oberyosboth react quickly with a trained battle-ready mind. Together they charge towards the cover they see up ahead, Oberyos stopping short of the crates as Thom speeds up, jumping onto the first, using his momentum to hop up to the second. As he climbs up onto the third crate there is a swoosh of steel.
Attack: 15 Damage: 6
The short sword of a hooded man bites into a crate, the blade passing through where Thom's leg was a moment before. Continuing his ascent Thom jumps up and grabs the lip of the roof, pulling himself up to stand on top of the roof. As he looks behind him, he cries out to his comrades that there are two hidden behind the crates.
@Oberyos, you may use your readied action to cast your acid splash on the two behind the crates instead if you wish.
Arjun rolls his hand and a half sword into his hands, and cries out, "Payback time, gnome..." He charges after Thom and Oberyos, catching up with the tall gnome and launching into a huge swing of his sword.
Reacting to the suspect warcry, and acting on his suspicions having watched Arjun's interaction with the other member of the party, Bryson quickly takes a stab at the half-orc as he charges past.
Attack: 15 Damage: 5
Landing a solid hit, that doesn't seem to phase Arjun, as focussed as the half-orc is on Oberyos. @Brandon, you're in the front line, you can get an attack too as he runs past you. This would be before your turn, so you'd still have reaction after your turn.
Attack: 14 Damage: 5
(Edit: Original attack rolls changed due to editing in the AoO, and then updating the post with formatting and this. First for Arjun's attack on Oberyos were a 14 to hit & 5 damage, so I've fudged the number back to that in case you want to use a reaction...)

Oberyos was looking backwards and to the rooftop. Although he is aware of the 2 behind the crates now, he was focused in the other direction. (OOC: Rooftop foe is still at risk of a mighty 1 acid damage.)
Looking back does mean that Arjun was noticed while trying to attack him. Oberyos uses his reaction for Arcane Deflection, the magic around him deflecting the strike (AC 16 for that specific attack).

Brandon mutters a curse as the crossbow bolts deflect harmlessly around him. He throws a sideways glance at Mara “See, I knew those three were up to no good. The All Father was trying to tell me something, just need to listen better.”
As Arjun attacks Oberyos, Brandon strikes at him with his warhammer as he moves past. "Looks like we have a turncoat amongst us. I don't like being played, lad."
Attack: 10 Damage: 4
Now alert to the others behind the crates, Brandon moves 25 feet deeper into the alley towards the others and attacks Arjun again
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Brandon's reactions prove a mite slower than they needed and his first attempt to clout the traitor falls short of the half-orc's charge. Taking up hot pursuit, Brandon follows Arjun and strikes a solid blow, the hammer blow landing squarely between Arjun's shoulders and sending him down to one knee, though still looking keen on the fight.
Arjun can make no attacks of opportunity with his reaction.
Thom scans the roof after getting himself up there and now sees the rooftop assailant with his heavy crossbow still in hand. The man discards the weapon rather than risking the time to crank it as he charges straight for Thom drawing his sword. Attack: 19 Damage: 3 Thom's climb onto the rooftop left him ill prepared to defend the rush and whilst the edge deflects off his armored shoulder, the flat of the blade still catches him with a ringing blow to the head. Seeing his opponent recovering, the man presses his advantage and tries to shove Thom back off the rooftop.
From behind the crates a man emerges, Brandon and Oberyos recognise the man from the meeting, his voice from earlier and the same hooded cloak. The hood now thrown back you see a plain face under thick blonde hair, quite unremarkable except for that twist to his features that petty vengeance arouses. Seeing Brandon standing over the kneeling Arjun, the man quickly steps forwards and engages the dwarf, launching into a furious series of cuts and thrusts to drive the dwarf back, bringing his short sword and dagger to bear on the armored dwarf's defences.
The first attack catches Brandon unawares, scoring a hit to his forearm, but the dwarf recovers and fends off the remaining attempts to end his life.
Oberyos can hear the winding of the crossbow from the other side of the crates, the second man behind the crates re-loading his weapon
Bryson, left standing in place as the others rush away, elects to maintain his distance. The robed man pulls forth a crossbow, mutters a few words under his breath then calmly loads a bolt and takes aim at the bandit captain.
Attack: 20 Damage: 2
Initiative - Mara is up, but I'll take any actions from Bryson, Oberyos and Thom for their second round in this run of posts

Rather blindsided by the chaos that erupts, Mara snaps into focus upon seeing Thom pushed off the crate and instinctually casts Feather Fall as a reaction, allowing him to land safely on his feet. Swallowing and taking her spellbook out, the halfling grimaces at Arjun's not entirely unexpected betrayal before pointing two fingers in his direction. With a disappointed shake of her head, the woman stated, "I'll show you that the quill is mightier than your sword." Immediately three vibrantly purple Magic Missiles in the form of quills, magically summoned from her fingertips before two of them shot towards Arjun with all the speed of an arrow. A quick glance at the figure that had shoved Thom and a flick of her wrist caused the last out of the three to shoot towards them, each of them finding their mark. Seeing the rest of her companions make their way quickly up through the street, Mara rushes to try to keep up, sticking to what she was used to and hanging just behind Thom who always made a compelling shield both figuratively and literally.
