Silvio drops the healers kit and rushes up to the last writhing pile of flesh , redrawing his short sword on the way. He leaps into the air and slashes down with the scimitar 10 Attack for 10 slashing damage and 7 thunder damage. He stabs with the short sword 15 attack for 3 piercing damage. The first attack also gets 7 sneak attack damage.
Sylvio then dashes to the east 15 feet to avoid its retaliation and to position himself between Sunny and the area the crow keeps coming from.
I can't see your rolls but the creature is restrained so attacks are made with advantage if that makes a difference.
Amadi continues his assault on the creature trying to bring it down. His hammer flies through the air and bears down on the mass of flesh.
Attack: 24 Damage: 14
I rolled with advantage as I'm not sure the effect if the failed Con save.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sweeps reels from the blows from the undead creature, like a prize fighter on the ropes. He pushes past the stench of decay and anger fills his eyes as he bursts into a rage. With a scream, he brings his maul around twice more, attempting to finally destroy the creature.
(Revising previous posts because the undead creature was already destroyed. Sweeps will not go into a rage)
Seeing the last undead creature fall to Sylvio’s blade and fancy footwork, Sweeps shoulders his maul and moves his full movement speed of 40 feet to join Gabriel and Chewy next to the cursed box. “Watch out, Gabriel. We’ll end this once and for all”he motions him to lean back and brings his maul down twice on the box, hard as he can swing.
The battle is hard and dawn and more than once you thought death was a certainty, either for you or the others and without them your chances of surviving this ordeal were low if at all existent. Those facts weighted on your mind, Sylvio, as you advanced and unleashed your strikes. You were sure the first of your slashes would miss, but for the last of the undead reacted unusually fast and was about to move outside of the attack. It was about to, but didn’t. The chains of fire conjured by Amadi held the thing in place and your steel tore through its rotten flesh. Putrid ichor sprayed the ground as the zombie clot lost almost all of its balance. So close, you thought as Brightflame raised his weapon. Thump. Anvilfist fell against the exanimate that simply broke under the weight of steel. The misshapen form of the thing collapsed over itself, leaving but a pile of corpses behind.
You, Gabriel, focused your mind on how to destroy the cursed box. Remembering your training you know that cursed items are a type of magic items. That means that they are at least as resistant as a normal object, usually resisting any damage in a way not too dissimilar to that in which you saw Sweeps resist attacks during his rage. But you attacked the kotoribako and it showed no sign of damage. Would that mean the thing is indestructible? The thought is enough to bring a chill through your spine. If that was the case then all of your efforts might well had been for nothing. But then you calm yourself, you remember that magic can be annulated. There are spells for that. Dispel Magic is the first that comes to mind and you know for sure that clerics know them. Before you could think about the closest temple to the area your genasi friend gives a warning soon followed by an attack of his.
It is strange, Sweeps. You are strong, used to hard labor, used to hard hits. As your weapon lands on the box you are sure any normal piece of wood would explode in a myriad of splinters, yet it does not. It was almost like hitting pavement with a stick. Not a dent, not a scratch. Your strength simply courses through its many pieces. Your instincts scream to you that none of you can cause physical damage to the damn thing. Then you look at Gabriel, and notices an expression of comprehension on his fate.
Child of Lathander, the barbarian attacks inspires on you a simple notion. You can not break the box, but you can move its pieces. You can solve the puzzle and undo the box with brains instead of brawns. Alas, victory is cut short, as shadow emanates from the object by your said, raising like smoke. With a screech the monstruous raven appears again, rising on the skies before diving into Sunny’s direction.
Notes: The last of the zombies is down. For simplicity sake we are out of combat. The crow still appears and tries to attacks Sunny.
@Grubba, Gabriel notices that it is not possible to damage the box, but spells that nullify magic, like Dispell Magic and Anti-Magic field, should nullify this imperviousness. He knows it will be easy to find a cleric capable of using Dispell Magic on the Spires of the Morning. Alternatively, he notices it is possible to move the pieces of the kotoribako and solve its puzzle, opening the box, which should end the curse but undoing the structure that is its source. @Everyone, until Gabriel shares his discoveries your characters know nothing about what to do with the box. @Paladin, given his large size, Amadi can once again make an attack of opportunity against the crow.
As the fiery shackles hold the undead creature Amadi is finally able to bring it down. With a final blow from Anvilfist the creature dies, its pieces scattering around. He turns his attention then to where the box is, all foes seem to be vanquished. But he also knows better, as long as the box exists the crow will return. Seeing the others try and destroy the box by striking it with their weapons he sees that he alone has held a weapon of any enchantment. Perhaps his is the one that could break the box. He strides forward and taking his hammer he brings Anvilfist down upon the box. He puts the might of the giant's into the blow.
Attack: 23 Damage: 12
As he does so the sound of the crow again catches his attention, he knew the creature to be a harbinger of death. He swipes at it with his hammer as it flies close to him.
Sylvia moves towards the box and watches the others pound in vain on it. Realizing that he cannot do any more than the others… indeed probably less, he instead prepares to defend Sunny from the crows. Positioning himself in a spot where he can quickly cut down the bird if it approaches her. “Is there-a no way to destroy-a this box or stop-a the damn birds-a?”
Sweeps grunts in frustration as his strikes have no impact on the box. He watches as Amadi tries as well with the strength of his giant’s form. “What manner of magic or curse is this?” He shrugs at Sylvio's questions and looks over at Gabriel who has studied the box the most. “How do we destroy this thing?”
He takes a moment to look around, and with no threats present, leans against his maul. Covered in blood, mud, and bits of corpse from the undead creatures, he is barely standing.
Gabriel holds the box aloft and says to the others "A cleric should be able to nullify it, but I think we can solve it - like a puzzle - and stop it now"
Gabriel then drops to one knee and tries to figure at the puzzle.
“Keep-a the eye up for-a the bird!” Sylvia slides closer to try to get a look at the box now that they have given up on bashing it to pieces like a bunch of barbarians.
As he edges closer to get a look he continues to hold his blades at the ready.
As soon as the avatar of the curse rose to the skies, Anvilfist fell upon it, fast and heavy, dissolving the monstruous crow into feathers and shadows once again. Gabriel expresses his fairly certain beliefs that the curse could be undone by either dispelling the box with divine magic or by solving its puzzle. The assimar tries to do so, but he couldn’t make sense of where to start.
The box itself was a cube of wood, around a feet and half in size with no decoration. Not a single mark. At least not for those whose eyes are not used to searching for hidden locks. As he approaches, the roguish Sylvio notices some space on the edges, separating each of kotoribako’s faces. This, he knew, suggested that the box was moveable. Isao’s words then come to his mind. Puzzle box. The elf is certain that if they move the sides of the box on the certain order, into the correct position, they can open it. The very notion was enough to heighten his spirits, for it meant a faster solution than searching for a cleric. Probably an easier too, after all not a day before the group had escaped from a noble house. At this point they could very well be targets of the Watch. But his happiness is short lived for his experience with locks ringed an alarm on his mind. What if the thing was trapped?
Notes: Amadi put the crow down again, but you know, it won't take much longer to return. Not while the box remains whole. Any doubt, hit me up on the OOC.
@Gunner, I assumed Sweeps is close to the others, helping them examine the box. @Althax, Sylvio knows for sure that there are moveable pieces on this box and that in a manner not too dissimilar to that of a Rubik's cube, those parts will need to be rearranged. He also considers, the possibility of the box itself being trapped. To check for physical traps you may roll another Investigation check, DC 16. You can receive help and guidance on this check. @Everyone, your character do not know what Sylvio discovered (he will have to say it to you). @Everyone, those who know the nature of the puzzle that makes the box may attempt a Investigation or Perception check to try moving the box's parts. The DC is 20 and you will need to succeed and characters attempting it can receive help and guidance. You will need to succeed three times to open the box.
Gabriel looks at the box with frustration, unable to figure it out. He knows that lives rely on them and he is about to run for a chapel to seek divine help when he sees that Sylvio has a look of recognition on his face.
"Here. If you know how to unlock this cursed thing then please, end this!"
Sylvio didn’t understand this whole business about curses and magic. He never received any training by or teaching on magics and only knew the simple trick he had always used since he was a boy. It somehow gave a weapon he wielded a bit of extra energy. He wasn’t even sure it was magic… just some kind of knack he had always had.
But this locked chest… ah now that was something he could understand. He was used to looking at small objects, boxes, locks, chests, and traps… this was something he knew about and by looking he knew there was something about it that could be moved and manipulated. Possibly another means of opening it.
”Move aside-a! Let-a me look at it closer-a.” He then kneels down next to hit and begins to trace the gap and designs on it seeing where pieces can be moved. He shows the others “Look-a! These pieces can-a be moved. If-a we can figure out the right-a movement, maybe it will-a open? The jewelers guild, we-a sometimes make boxes similar to-a this to help-a secure the jewels.”
He looks up at the others “I-a don’t know if-a it might be trapped or if-a there may be more magical spells upon it-a. It may take-a some time but with-a your help I think-a we can get it open.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Amadi listened to the words of Sylvio. "You will need Guidance to help look for traps. I can then help you as you try and figure it out. Again the aid of Gond will guide your hands as you try to figure it out."
Amadi will give Guidance to each person who tries.
Ever watchful for the return of the crow Amadi keeps his hammer close prepared to strike if needed.
When it is his turn to try he takes a close look to see what might work.
Sweeps leans in and stares at the box, Gabriel’s words echoing in his head. “Puzzle? What kind of puzzle? Like moving pieces?” Sweeps was no fan of puzzles and lacked the patience to deal with them. “If we can’t smash the box, maybe burn it?”
Sweeps steps back as Sylvio and the others continue to examine the box and moves to stand protectively next to Sunny, ready to defend her if the crow reappears.
