Ariana takes a seat at a table with her back to a wall and scans the room for any trouble. The Wicker Goat was recommended to them, but they were also warned multiple times about outsiders in this town, and she's with some visibly obvious outsiders.
Ariana - As you make your way over to the private room with the rest of your companions, you don't see anything that you would classify as trouble in your mind. What you do see appear to be a mixture of dirty mine workers, off-duty town guardsmen, an on-duty town guardsman having a chat with a few of the patrons for a bit before she leaves, and other non-descript folk enjoying the drink, food, and comradery to be found at The Wicker Goat. Once everyone enters the private room and presumably shuts the door, you find the din of the taproom to be muted.
"Thanks Lankus, I'll be sure to entertain you all in a while, just need to rest eat and drink first. I hope I will be an improvement to a squirt of piss." Elwyn says to Lankus. "Share a room?" He says to Kulogall before heading over to the private room.
As you all come into the room, Kulogall sits down and waits until everyone is in and has a nice beverage in front of them. He holds his glass up and says "I guess you wonder why I gathered you all here today. (Very formal, grim and serious. Then he breaks into a big smile and says) Cheers! To a job completed, a wagon train defended, owlbear defeated and all of our body parts intact! (He looks over at Daveth and winks, gives him a grin)" He proceeds to down three quarters of his beer after the toast, waits for everyone to finish, and then he gets a little more serious.
"I need to tell you a little more about my past for this next part to make sense. When I grew up on the Moonshae isles in Alaron, when I was 7 or 8 or so, I developed some magical abilities. I don't know where they came from, it was as natural to me as breathing or swimming. All of a sudden, I was just able to do things, like light a fire, or causing a gust of wind to blow, or... as it happened a little later, being able to send a message to someone with my mind, without saying anything." He looks around the table. "I've demonstrated a little of that to you during our trip. But my younger brother Xolo was always jealous of me, of my abilities. He could not do these things, and again we had no idea why. As happens with older and younger brothers, we had a little rivalry in our family. He resented me for my magical abilities, and it made him study all the more. He became a wizard, and poured his time into books, the study of magic, everything he could do to learn about it. At times we compared notes, to be honest a lot of what he said was over my head. But I was always a little better than him at everything, throwing a spear, running fast on the sand, hurling a bolt of fire at a target. One time, we worked together to repel some invaders from our island. But, he grew to hate me over time. But we are strangely bonded together as well you see. He learned how to transmit thoughts with his mind as well, and somehow, since we are brothers, we have learned to .. sense each other, even see and hear each other at times. I think we have figured out that it can travel over a mile or two, and each of us can shut the other out if we focus and concentrate on it." He pauses here and takes a sip.
"I know this is a lot to digest. And I don't want to put us in danger, any of you in danger, just being around me. But when I was in the Coast Guard of Alaron I heard tales of a powerful wizard who was a Triton that made his way to Waterdeep, one that was doing all sorts of malevolent things. I had a bad feeling I knew who that was. I crossed the ocean to hunt him down and sure enough, I sensed his presence. But I heard rumor that he fled Waterdeep, that he pissed off a crime boss in that city, someone under Xanathar and he was leaving, making his way to Saltmarsh. I have been looking for him and this is a big part of the reason I wanted to head to Saltmarsh." He has a look of concern on his face, stays quiet for a moment, and then locks eyes with each of you at the table.
"When I was on watch that night, I sensed my brother, meaning that he is not too far from here. He was storming around, obviously fuming mad. He was going down some stairs, into a cellar. He was talking about a girl that was found dead, apparently a girl who was going to be made into a slave. He was yelling at an underling named Sanbalet, talking about this girl but apparently she bit a finger off of someone, and then she was murdered. He started beating Sanbalet with a book, taking out his anger on him. He is obviously mixed up in something very dark, criminal." He finishes his beer.
"Despite it all, I love my brother, deep down, and I don't think I can bring myself to kill him. But I can stop him. Keep him from hurting anyone else, maybe change him, I don't know." He looks down. "I don't think so. But I feel like I need to try."
"Will you help me look into this? I feel this is related to what is going on around here perhaps, I want to find out who this Sanbalet character is and what is going on, what he is mixed up in..."
Wake restrains himself from overtly trying to listen in. But his curious nature can still get him into trouble and not let him unhear things he should not be hearing.
The laughter your joke produced is quickly swallowed by the many other noises in the taproom. To your left an older human woman with a lean, fit look about her speaks with a short, older human man across from her, "...think it's the Sea Princes." The man sighs and says, "I hope not. They took my brother you know. I was..." The rest of his reply is lost as a shout rings out from a nearby table, but you catch the woman's response, "...wrists bound, rags for clothes, half-starved before she drowned. Sounds like slavers to me Garl. I don't have to tell you that the Sea Princes were the biggest slave traders this side..." By this point you're too far away to hear any more.
The tables and chairs in front of you are closer together than two people can politely walk through abreast, so you stand aside and let the rest of your companions trickle by, allowing for traffic the other ay as well as some patrons make their way over to the bar. While you wait, you can't help but overhear a table of miners at a nearby table, "...telling ya, it was a Trog." says one. A burst of laughter from a couple of the others before one replies, "The only Trogs you see are the ones you take back to your tent, Eddarn." More laughter precedes Eddarn's rebuttal, "Ha. Ha. Joke all ye want, I know what I saw. I'm gonna tell Manistrad when she comes in." The laughter stops, "Well, yer either serious or stupid to bother 'er after hours over some Trogs, even if it's true. Good luck with that." The pass through the two tables clears and you take your turn through on your way to the private room.
It's hard to make out any specifics with the level of noise in the taproom, but you manage to overhear a snippet of conversation as you head to the private room. "...patrol's lost somewhere out in the Mere. Eiliander's tryin' to put together a search and rescue but there ain't many interested in..."
On your way through the crowded taproom, you overhear a few snippets of various conversations as you pass, "...think I might go check it out on my day off. Wanna come with?" says one patron and another replies, "Creepy old house on a hill? Strange lights and sounds comin' from within? Count me out. I can think of more than a few better things to do on my..." the rest is lost as you continue on toward the private room. From another table you hear, "...and jus' where d'ya think he got his coin to start that shop in the first place? He's smugglin' jus' like half the merchants in town. I know it. Jus' gotta find some proof is all. Then maybe I'll finally make Sergeant. Then I'll..." The heavy door of the private room cuts off the rest as it closes behind you.
All - After Kulogall tells his tale someone knocks on the door to the private room. An older woman with greying blonde hair gathered into a working bun atop her head peeks in and says, "Excuse me folks, I'll come by and take your orders if you'd like." Barring no objections, she'll enter and do just that. She wears a simple blue dress with the sleeves rolled up and an apron over the front. She gives the following options for food and drink:
Beef and vegetable stew with barley biscuits - 7cp
Seared scallops with garden salad - 7cp
Grouse half with grilled leeks -7cp
Catch of the day, blackened with lemon butter sauce over rice - 1sp
Fresh baked bread loaf with crock of butter - 5cp
Grog - 2cp
Rum - 2cp
Ale - 3cp
Mead - 3cp
Stout - 3cp
Wine - 4cp
She then leaves and returns with the drinks a few minutes later. It is about twenty minutes after the drinks arrive that she and another barmaid bring the food.
As you make your way through the busy tavern to the private room, you see a human woman in the uniform and armor of the town guard speaking with a table of men nearby. "...was pretty busy, didn't get a chance to follow up on it. I don't think some dead out-of-towner is very high on Eliander's priority list, but if you could look into it, I'd appreciate it. She and her brother were staying at The Snapping Line. Haven't seen hide nor hair of him since..." says one of the men to the woman amidst the rest of the tavern noise. The rest is lost to you, but you catch part of the woman's reply before she heads out the door. The woman rolls her eyes and says, "Oh yeah, I bet you were real busy. I've got my own cases to work Shem, sorry. Anyway, I've gotta go now, I'm on duty."
Wake will order a shot of rum as his appetizer. Then place his order for the Catch of the Day with a glass of wine. He will nurse his shot of rum as he listens to Kulogall finish his tale.
”A noble quest, to redeem a brother. Count me in.”
Later, and when suitable he will ask Daveth, “Would you be interested in sharing a room, or did you have your heart set on the Common Room?”
Still later, Wake will mention to the group, “It seems this town is filled with adventure. I overheard someone claim there are troglodytes in the mines, at least that’s what I thought I heard. Oh, and they mentioned telling Manistrad about it. We mustn’t forget to introduce ourselves to her and tell her … oh dear, what was her name? You know, Isadore’s partner … sent us.”
Wake - Daveth says, "Sure, I'll share a room with you. I don't think I'd sleep very well in the common area. I didn't catch her name either, but wasn't it Isadore that recommended we look for this Copperlocks person?"
Kulogall - Daveth nods along as you tell your tale. After Wake agrees to help, Daveth quickly says, "Count me in for the noble quest as well. Any brother of yours is a brother of mine... Er, I mean... I'm happy to help a friend.... and their brother." He then buries his reddening face in an ale.
Wake - Daveth says, "Sure, I'll share a room with you. I don't think I'd sleep very well in the common area. I didn't catch her name either, but wasn't it Isadore that recommended we look for this Copperlocks person?"
To Daveth and loud enough for others to hear.
”You’re probably right. The rum and wine have me addled. Time to switch to water, for all of our sakes.”Wake says with a boozy smile and watery eyes.
Ruby orders a grog to warm herself up and beef and vegetable stew. She gets comfortable, grog in hand and listens intently to Kulogalls story.
"That´s a lot to take in..I assume we´re the first ones to hear this story? It must have been hard carying all of this alone." Says Ruby, definitely shocked.
"You mentioned a girl that was found dead right? I just heard someone in the tavern talking about a "dead out-of-towner" and that she and her brother were staying at the Snaping line, here in town." She says as she watches Kulogalls expresion change. "But her brother seems to be missing too. Still it might be a good place to start searching tomorow."
Elwyn orders the Catch of the day with a glass of white wine to go with that.
"And you will have my lute...I mean of course I'll help you sort out your family problems Kulogall." Elwyn says sincerely to the triton. "Your vision seems to involve slavery and if that is the case it might also involve the Sea Princes, the biggest slave traders this side of the Trackless sea." Elwyn says and goes on telling a tale of the fearsome Sea Princes, the terror of the Sword coast.
