Davis has been silent after the mine ride, his face stoic. As the group moves to the snail races he would move to Breakneck, wanting to try to do something to put the thoughts of that last ride from his mind, and get back to enjoying this again.
The snails can move surprisingly fast, approximately 80 feet per round. The track is about 480 feet long, you are told. A good jockey can also try to coax his snail to go faster.
Those riding snails, the race is about to begin! In the interest of time, I'll ask you to make 8 animal handling checks all at once. I will also roll to determine some snail race surprises that could occur. My rolls (not important to you to know):
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
You're all lined up at the starting line of the race track. Every snail is represented, the ones not selected by you have been filled in by other bystanders-turned-snail-jockeys. All too soon, there's a countdown and a burst of fireworks to signal the start of the race, and you're off! Snail Shellymoo in position 1 has a bad start, her jockey harness apparently not properly fastened, and the jockey scrambles to not fall off as the harness comes tumbling off when the snail lurches forward (dex save 13). No other major mishaps occur, and the snails burst forward, some more quickly than others. Viola's Quickleaf may have been misnamed as the snail seems a bit lazier than the others, falling slightly behind, whereas Davis & Calanon's steeds pull ahead of the pack a bit, but Pal's snail is the fastest off the finish line, perhaps borrowing some of its rider's enthusiasm.
Shellymoo's rider has tumbled off and the pink-shelled snail is left to its own devices. It meanders along unhurriedly and quickly falls far behind the others.
Viola is apparently recognized by the crowd as "that cheerful rhyming musical half-elf" and they start to chant, giving Quickleaf and herself a bit of a morale boost, as well as a speed boost, to take an early lead. Pal and Davis stay ahead of the pack as well, but Calanon's Nimblefoot doesn't seem to be responding well to his urgings and is lagging behind a bit.
You all find your stride, so to speak, although unfortunately Nimblefoot's (Calanon's) stride doesn't seem to be very fast or urgent, and he's fallen significantly behind. Nimblefoot at one point seems to balk at his urging's, going even slower, out of spite?
Viola and Pal are in the lead, Viola with the edge, while Davis's Breakneck is flagging a bit at the back of the main pack. With some final urgings, Viola's snail crosses the finish line first, closely followed by Pal! Davis and Calanon end up in 6th and 7th place, respectively, with riderless Shellymoo having stopped about halfway along to eat a head of cabbage someone had thrown onto the ground near the track.
Pal will clasp his hands together and wave them from side to side as he takes a victory lap around the course. Even though he was second, he will celebrate as if he won by a mile.
As they all cross the finish line Viola, who is a half-elf and not a gnome, nimbly dismounts Quickleaf, gives him a pat on the shell and turns to the cheering crowd "Thank you for cheering, this has been fun but as far as I'm concerned we all won." She rhymes and bows deeply before playing her violin again, ready to move on to the next attraction, that someone else can choose.
Oopsies, terribly sorry! The crowd got a bit confused I guess.
The crowd cheers happily at your displays of good sportsmanship, and the happiness of the entire carnival increases yet again. Viola is presented with a small round crystal container shaped like a snail shell, stoppered with a cork carved into a snail’s head, and containing a bright green fluid which is a potion of advantage.
Calanon, as well, is presented with a consolation prize, a small wooden magic wand that allows you to cast dancing lights one time.
During this impromptu awards ceremony, your group is approached by a large figure. A bugbear wearing dungarees, fairy wings, and a helmet made from a jack-o’-lantern strides up. “Follow me,” he growls. “Management wants to see you.”
Davis was glad of the race. It helped get his mind off that issue with the mine ride they had been on before it. He is not overly concerned about coming in near last, it was a fun race, that was all that was important to him.
As the bugbear comes out to tell them to follow, he raises an eyebrow, but shrugs. "Just as well see what they want." He comments as he follows the bugbear.
The bugbear gives a toothy grin and says, “Don’t worry, Mister Rabbit, it’s nothing bad. Mr Light and Mr Witch look like they’re in a good mood.” He ushers you n the direction of the staff area.

Calanon shrugs as he moves to Nimblefoot since the others had been claimed and the color of the shell matches his current skin color.
