"What...?" Randy stares at the newly animated mess kit, blinking his three eyes rapidly. "Er...hello?"  He waves tentatively at the creature, not quite sure what to make of this. 

He sighs. "Well, unless this is a temporary spell,  it looks like I'll need a new mess kit." He glares at the portal, trying to ascertain if it's showing signs of weakening or not. 

((Ah, not on every hit, but every time one of the nodules of energy is damaged enough it dispersed. Realized I didn't actually say that on this one. Whoops!))

The portal has shrunk further with Randy impacting it.

The mess kit waves back at Randy. When he sighs about needing a new mess kit, it folds its legs in and sits down, flopping the top open and reaching in to pull out the small mug, bowl and utensils, as if demonstrating it's still perfectly functional.

Ulmwin can't help a small snicker.

"Down boy, down!" he 'commands' the mess kit, which... Well, it's far more harmless than the third eye, at least.

"Let's just hope it stays with stuff like that if it needs to happen with each hit..."

(Did something happen when Ulmwin hit it? Because if so, he might as well try and help.)

((Yeah, Ulmwin's hit caused it to shudder and destabilize, Randy just finished that one off.))

Messy doesn't respond to Ulmwin's commands.

Dornikal takes a step back from Messy and the portal.

"Aye think we'll need to talk to Kreldoran after this. Definitely need to."

Ulmwin sighs, but realizes he should probably take some of the brunt of this, too. 

"If I grow a third ear, someone better treat me to drinks."

Randy eyes Messy, muttering "...and the dish ran away with the spoon."  He shakes himself out of it and addresses the mess kit. "We'll talk about your duties later. For now, consider yourself promoted to 'familiar'.  That being said, I need you to get back in the pack for now and just be still.  You'll be safer there. We'll do a better job of sorting things out once we've got time to figure out what you're capable of.  We've still got to close that thing," and he points at the portal, "and you probably don't want to get hit with another stray blast.  I'm going to move you back out of range...anyway I HOPE it'll be out of range."

Ulmwin blasts another of the nodules, sending it scattering apart.

Messy stands up on its little legs and bobs up and down, tucking away all the utensils inside and clamping the lid back in place before holding both arms up for Randy to pick it up and put it in the pack.

Randy picks Messy up and tucks it carefully away in his pack, then takes the pack out about 60 feet and puts it down in a relatively dry patch.  He then trots back towards the gate. He watches with interest as Ulmwin takes a turn at the gate.

Once Randy picks Messy up, it clamps both arms across the top of its lid to hold itself still and quiet.

Ulmwin feels magic building within him unbidden. Does he focus it on one or more of the three remaining nodules?

Yup, while quickly saying something about staying back

Seven magical darts of force spring from Ulmwin and slam into two of the three remaining nodules, causing both to burst and de-tangle.
