He puts the reflecting glass back in it's spot and returns to his desk. 'Now, it is key you understand that spells like the one you are currently performing require you to concentrate to maintain them, so be very careful with that should you need the spell to last.' he clasps his hands in front of him.
'Now that you know how to control it, you should have far fewer issues, but beware there's still a, ooooh, 5% chance? And that's assuming you don't let your emotions get the better of you. Now, that's all I have time for today, I'm afraid, but come back tomorrow and I'll teach you a few more simple spells.' he goes back to the parchments in front of him.'
Hamish smiles sheepishly at the praise. He nods as the Chancellor explains, but as the elf turns back to his papers, Hamish says, "And what about the magic that hurts people? How do I control that?"
The Chancellor arches an eyebrow, 'The exact same way, Master Hamish. Don't worry, I'll teach you a few offensive spells over our study, I can't send you out defenseless' he chuckles, as if he didn't already do that...
Despite the Chancellor being a good teacher, something about his last comment stokes something in Hamish. He feels the same anger he felt at those who offered him something on the street, only to yank it away or expect something of him. If there was anything Hamish wanted to use magic for apart from helping others, was to never let someone patronize him for being who and what he was. Glancing around the room, Hamish seeks out something unnecessary, like a waste-bin or coat-rack. He lets the anger rise inside of him at that chuckle, and recalls the looks, scoffs, and outright abuse he endured just for trying to survive. He raises a hand and lets the rage flow from his palm, and whispers, "Rozruch."
(Casts Chaos Bolt, 11 to hit, 14 psychic damage, 2 on the Wild Magic!)
As Hamish opens his eyes before the Chancellor can react to the outburst, he says, "Like that?"
The Chancellor's eyebrows shoot up as you unleash a blast of energy on his furniture. His look of shock turns to one of momentary panic as 7 darts materialize and suddenly fly towards him.
He raises a hand and in a commanding voice booms 'Abbrechen!' the darts suddenly disintegrate as they zoom towards him. (Counterspell, DC 15, Charisma check 21)
He exhales sharply. 'Now that is wild magic.' he says after a moment. 'Master Hamish, there is a long list of known side effects, some are harmless, some are amusing and some...' he gestures at the air where the darts just were, 'Are deadly.' he sighs, 'Well, at least I don't need to worry about you being defenseless.'
Darwin keeps quiet as promised, proud of the work that his new friend was doing.
He recognises the look that comes across the face of Hamish after the talk of offensive spells. He has worn that same look many times, when he feels he is being disrespected. He starts to lean forward, about to speak, before everything happens in a blur. The exploding furniture, the glowing missiles there for a moment before disappearing.
In the mayhem, Darwin realises too late that he had jerked himself backwards, instinctively trying to get away from the danger. He teeters for a moment with his chair only having the back two legs on the ground. The teeter becomes a wobble, and the wobble ends with him tipping backwards. The chair lands with a loud crash, Darwin tumbling to the floor with it.
He looks up from his prone position and starts to laugh, partly releasing nervous energy, partly because he just fell off his chair and it was funny.
"Oops", he says picking himself up and brushing down his clothes with his hands.
"Well", he says, "it is only day one, lots to practice", he says winking at Hamish.
He turns to the Chancellor, "If you and Hamish are done for the day, I promised Ida and Toryn I would see if you had any work going. Something that suits our skill sets, keeps us away from crowded spaces, and earns some coin. What do you think?"
The Chancellor's brows furrow as he thinks for a moment. 'That really depends on what you decide qualifies as work? I suspect your thinking of similar tasks as the last I set you on for all 4 of you, hmmm? I'm afraid I don't have anything like that right now but I'll tell you what.'
He smiles 'You seem to have a way with animals, I can secure you work in the stables or with the Rangers, which will provide you enough coin to maintain a lifestyle of some comfort and I can take Master Hamish here as an aide in a similar manner.'
'It is my understanding that Mr. Toryn has a fairly successful business out in town already, and Dame Ida can work with the Duke's guard. Then, once something comes up, I will let you know. Mmmm?'
The clattering sound of the gnome falling from his chair and laughing breaks Hamish from his trance. He runs over to help Darwin up, a bit embarrassed by chaotic outburst but glad the Chancellor was able to stop too much damage from occurring.
The Chancellor shrugs, 'Can't say I've ever been out with them. I believe their main job is to ensure the nearby wildlife is kept in good steading, discourage poachers etc.'
So, there's some downtime until another adventure becomes available, how do each of you spend your time? What kind of lifestyle do you maintain and how?
Toryn continue working in his shop and sells a few items. His living is comfortable but he misses the excitement of battle and can't wait to get out there again.
Ida returns home and finds out her parents have no idea she was incarcerated. She chose not to tell them, only to give them the details that she got into trouble trying to help someone and that the Duke himself understood her reasoning and she has been cleared of any wrong-doing. Her family is used to Ida getting herself into a bit of trouble but always somehow getting away unscathed.
She returns to her order of knights and works on small projects a few days a week, mostly charitable as that is the reason she joined that order. When she isn't working, she walks the streets and tries to help those she can, usually with her favorite pup by her side (the kids love to play with the pup). She checks in on Hamish and Darwin at least every other day and makes sure they are content, and tries to be sure they have somewhere safe and warm to sleep each night with a belly full of good food and ale. She goes to see Toryn to get some armor repaired and tries to send him additional business with people that have the coin to pay well.
She was paid well by a Noble to deliver a message, which will help support her throughout the next several weeks.
Darwin accepts the Chancellors offer of help by joining the Rangers, venturing out of the city and patrolling the surrounding countryside. He is trying to familiarise himself with larger animals, training to ride a mount like one of the mastiffs. He will see if he can make friends with some tiny creatures on his travels, maybe a squirrel and/or ferret that are willing to accompany him.
He also investigates the possibility of joining a theatre or entertainer troupe, or even joining a group of musicians that frequent a pub by playing his pan flute.
He is still renting rooms at the same inn, and happily meets up with his friends for a drink or some food whenever they are about.
Toryn returns to the inn every other night to check in with everyone and see how they're progressing. His business becomes more popular thanks to Ida. But he now has a request for a longsword with rubies in the hilt and has no rubies. He's ready to venture again to seek them.
Hamish doesn't do much other than stay the inn and practice with the small forms of magic to avoid the mishap in the Chancellor's office. He's never had a roof over his head and steady meals for this long. He certainly tries to see Ida, Darwin, and Toryn when they can, but he's really never had free time in such a surplus. Most of it was spent finding food, warmth, or safety. At times, he gets uncomfortable with the stability and finds a place to hide, just to feel the familiar.
The Chancellor grins, 'Magnifico!' he exclaims.

(10, so Magic Missile as a 5th level spell. That'll launch 7 darts.)

"What do these Rangers do then? Being stuck in the stables sounds like a bit of drag", he replies.
The Chancellor shrugs, 'Can't say I've ever been out with them. I believe their main job is to ensure the nearby wildlife is kept in good steading, discourage poachers etc.'
“The great outdoors! That sounds perfect”, Darwin agrees.

Two weeks go by and each of you is summoned to the Palace by the Chancellor.
Once you are all gathered in his office slash study, he claps his hands.
'Good morning everyone, I have a job for you.'
Darwin climbs up on a seat and sits down. "You've found something suitable for our mix of skills? This should be interesting", he says with a smile.
"By the way, thanks for the hook up with the Rangers, it's going well. At least from my point of view", he adds with a chuckle.
