Ida goes home and prepares by telling her family of her time away. She makes arrangements for her retainer Martha to keep the pup cared for, and for her ears and eyes to stay open. She trusts Martha to keep tabs on everything within her home and the Noble community discreetly.
She packs carefully, she takes extra rations to make sure they have enough to eat, and she talks to her father's kitchen and acquires some of the best jerky she's had in years. It could be a nice treat for them on the road while they travel.
(Sorry Hamish, I'm sure you can tell the others how you spent this time in dialogue 😂)
When the allotted time arrives, you're all in the allotted place and set out on the road north. The early scenes are that of farmlands, along with the City's graveyard that sits just beyond it's walls.
As you travel north, the farmlands give way and you are now now heading through rolling hills. Antonius leads the way, guiding you as directly north as possible. In the distance on either side you occasionally spot a smaller town, village or the occasional rural farmstead.
Darwin looks apprehensive on his horse to begin with, even though he is riding the smallest of the mounts, but eventually gets a little more used to it.
”Have you all spent much time travelling outside Haukberg?”, he asks his friends as he surveys their surroundings, looking at the scenery as much as keeping a lookout for trouble.
He has travelled to many worlds with the carnival but never done much exploring on the worlds themselves. He was quite excited by the prospect of this trip.
Back in me time with the army I been all over these lands. Toryn gazes around him. Usually too busy battlin' to enjoy the sights though. Maybe this time I'll get to enjoy it.
((All good. I've been busy with real life stuff. And Hamish wouldn't have done much but wait impatiently. =P I'm also assuming the party is not going by his home village, but can modify this bit in case they are.))
Hamish, despite never having ridden a horse, seems to get the rhythm of it. He's definitely still a new rider, but seems relaxed by the big creature beneath him. He finds himself stroking its fur absentmindedly as he listens.
He turns toward everyone else and tries to raise his voice enough to be heard. "I never left Haukberg once I got there, but I was born just outside of it. That's where I ran from after everything." He stares into the distance for a moment before asking, "Toryn, what was it like in the army? Were you in a lot of battles?"
Toryn's eyes glaze over. Aye he responds. T'is a brutal business. Many a mountain is made green by feeding on the remains of war. My blade has been washed of more blood than your body holds. He absently looks down to his armor and you think you see a tear in his eye, but he says no more.
Darwin listens intently as Toryn speaks about his past. It was obviously a hard subject, but it was good to learn more about the dwarf and his history. It put his behaviour recently into a bit more context, maybe he treated every situation like a battle because that was what his life had been like.
He smiles at his dwarven comrade from his perch atop his horse, "Hopefully those days are in the past, and even if they cannot be forgotten, they won't be repeated".
"War will always be with us in some form, but we are lucky. Duke Haukberg is not a man who fights for the sake of fighting, or someone who doesn't the lives of his people. From what I know he will do his best to keep a war far from us, which is good news for all"
The first day passes without incident and after a long day on the road you pull into a sleepy town and get rooms at a small Inn.
Antonius says, 'Get some food then go to bed. We will be leaving again as soon as possible. We will only stop for the bare minimum amount of time.' he instructs before taking his own pack to his room and locking the door.
Darwin watches Antonius lock himself in his room and turns to the others.
"I have never been a guard before, but it seems like we should keep watch outside his door, right? I don't mind taking the first shift, if someone could bring me some hot food and a bit of ale?", he says surprising himself at how responsibly he was thinking.
Aye, that makes sense. I'll take the second watch and I'll even get ye food. Toryn goes to get Darwin his food and ale before returning to his own. After he finishes he turns in for a short nap prior to his watch
Darwin takes a seat on the floor next to the door, crossing his legs. Taking out his crystal he waves it around his small frame and is suddenly replaced by a vase with a floppy leafed plant.
As Toryn returns he pops his head out to take the food and ale.
Toryn looks for Darwin and starts angrily muttering about how it was Darwin's idea to post a watch and not even 10 minutes in he abandoned his post. Suddenly Darwin's head pops out of the plant and Toryn yelps. I told ye I didn't trust magic! Ye got me good lad. He chuckles as his irritation is replaced by good humor at Darwins prank.
The night passes without incident, as does the following day and night and so on. For the first 4 nights you are able to find Inn's to stay at in small towns and villages.
As the sun begins to set on the 5th, Antonius rides with a furrowed brow. 'I don't understand how we haven't reached Wiesenberg.' he says mostly to himself, but Toryn and Hamish overhear him.
Then, louder, he announces. 'We will need to find a place to make camp tonight. Let us get off the road.' and he steers his mount off into the trees on the side of the road to a small clearing. 'This seems like a good spot.'
Toryn sets about collecting firewood while thinking about what he overheard, not knowing Hamish heard it too. During his army days he marched all over the lands and realizes the mistake Antonius made. His first thought is to knock out the benefactor, but reigns himself in since he wants that magical sword. After starting a small fire he tucks into his ration, quiet as he is lost in thought.
He finishes his meal and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. Antonius... a word in private please?
They step off to the side while the others finish their meal.
Wiesenberg is still another 2 and a half days from here. Did ye plan on traveling all day and all night without a rest?! Admit your mistake to the others now, or I will. And if I do it I'll be convincing them to abandon ye here fer lyin to us and getting 5 days o protection for free.
Darwin eats his rations gratefully, he was a little sore after another day in the saddle. "Does riding always feel this...uncomfortable?", he says to Hamish and Ida as Toryn wanders off with Antonius.
He leans back against a tree, enjoying being back in the country. He takes out his pan flute and begins to play - Performance: 18
"Riding can be uncomfortable, especially at first. I'd bet your saddle needs to be customized to better fit you and your frame. In the morning, when we mount up, I'll come over and inspect before we leave. Maybe there are some small changes we can make to help for the rest of the trip."
Ida can sense a bit of tension in Toryn and Antonius, and she's anxious to understand why.
Antonius arches an eyebrow at Toryn, 'Two and a half?' his face shifts as he begins to do mental calculations. His eyes widen suddenly as he realizes his mistake. '****.' he grumbles. He pats a hand on the Dwarf's shoulder and walks back to the group.
'So, it seems, I have made a slight oversight.' he begins, the words tasting foul in his mouth as he says them. He is not a man accustomed to being wrong. 'When I calculated the journey's duration, I calculated distance, average travelling speed and the subsequent timespan, which came out to 4 days and 10 hours.' he clears his throat nervously. 'It seems, I may have failed to account for the necessities of living creatures such as meal times, bathroom breaks and...well...sleep.' he wrings his hands together.
'So, with the additional...50 or so hours I had not accounted for, the trip is going to take an additional three days either side of our stop.'

Darwin sticks to his normal schedule with the rangers, letting them know he will be away for a period of time.
He will pick up some travelling supplies, such as a bedroll, water skin and some rations for the road.

Toryn scoffs at the naivety. War will always be with us. Peace is a prize sought by all by unattainable by any.
