Lady Kaede continues to watch the weird little newt as it approaches them, still confused as to whether it be friend or foe or something in between. She responds to Rum’s query with a shrug, and yells out “I agree, Rum-san. We’ve little time to dally here, for who knows how long the troopers will be away. Does anyone think that weird speaking newt is a threat? If so, dispatch with it post haste. If not, someone teach it the proper way to bypass the hidden mines.”
With almost drooling intensity, Lady Kaede watches Ro as he investigates around the camp, and shows Kaede the blade sharpening stone, which she quickly pockets. “Ahhhh, well done Master Ro! You’re skills are deeply important to the future of our mission….are you sure you will quest no further?”
Rum looks quizzically at the newt in his hands, "There are no newts to be friendly with now, Greko the White".
When Lady Kaede asks whether the newt is a threat, he sighs. "I believe it is Greko the White, but am unsure what magic has made him look like a newt and become a halfwit. It seems like a bad trade. Perhaps it was cast upon him by an unfriendly wizard", he says looking about but seeing nothing.
When Ro makes his pronouncement, he narrows his eyes. "You are up to something, Ro the Red. I just pray to the Great Dragon it is to the benefit of our cause. If you must stay, be safe. And try and work out how to close this portal for when we get back".
He turns back to Jek and Lady Kaede, "Did you find anything useful in the commander's tent? Are we ready to move through the portal now?"
Greko the newt looks at rum with sadness in his eyes. Figuring there's no reason to stay as a newt Greko the newt leaps off of Rum and transforms back into Greko. "Ah Greko sees that the decision was to slay the newts....Sad, sad state of affairs. Greko was going to make friends with them....Sad, sad indeed. Greko will follow you"
Responding to Rum, Lady Kaede says flatly “Mostly useless books, perhaps those of you well read would enjoy. Nothing of my tastes, however. What I wouldn’t give for a good book of poetry! Oh, we did find a useful map of the Great Cavern, highlighting the route to our destination, and including guard towers along the way that we should surely steer clear of.”
Addressing Greko: “Welcome back, old master Greko! We were wondering where you slipped off to, figuring you left to take a nap somewhere. Sorry for the scare…we weren’t aware that it was you. Better to approach next time announced, rather than in disguise.”
"Lady Kaede is correct , Greko the White. Running off doing your own thing separately from the band does not help anyone", Rum says in agreement.
"Now, does the map show any detail of what is directly on the other side of the portal? If not, I can take Porkins and scout invisibly, but I do not know how these portals work, it may warn people on the other side it is in use", he asks, looking about the camp. "We should not linger here, fellow Remnants".
"I do believe it does, Master Rum!" she excitedly exclaims, as she unfurls the map and shows it to Rum. "I believe this little tendril here" as she points to the portal at the top of the map "reflects the portal over there" as she points to the portal looming ahead of them in camp, "...and then this route shows the main supply path to the the Titan Forge, along the shores of the Subhylian Sea...but we must be wary of the three guard posts highlighted. Perhaps as we approach them, you could scout ahead invisibly, and see if there is a way to bypass them without alerting any troopers?"
"It doesn't look like there is a camp directly on the other side, mirroring this one, Lady Kaede", Rum says as he looks over the map. "But best err on the side of caution. I will go concealed on Porkins, and I suggest you all maintain the charade you used to get into this camp. Be cautious of traps on the other side as well".
He then takes his horn from his belt and blows on it. No sound can be heard by any present, although Porkins does hear it, and makes his way back to the camp.
"Let The Great Dragon keep you safe, fellow Remnants", he says as Porkins appears and he mounts up.
Rum sees how despondent his lizardfolk friend looks, and the harsh demeanour that he has learnt to portray since his friends died or left softens.
"Friend Greko", he says now looking down at the others from the back of the star lancer. "If you can still become a tiny creature, I can conceal you on my person and you can come and scout through the portal with me whilst benefiting from being invisible. What do you say?".
If Greko agrees, he will reach down his arm so Greko can scurry up in whatever form he chooses that is small enough to hide in a pocket. He will then salute the others and take off, heading for the portal. At the last moment, before going through, Porkins will become invisible.
Greko looks up at Rum with a big Greko smile “Greko can! Ooh watch what Greko can do!” Greko grabs Rums arm and turns into a spider. He scurried along Rums arm and right into a pocket.
Ro stares at Rum with black eyes when he's accused of being up to something, but says and does nothing to change Rum's mind. He just continues, doing his thing, snuffing out the various traps in the camp and ignoring the rest of the Ardent Remnants before leaving back through the front gate...
Having seen no evidence of danger on the the other side, Rum turns Porkins around and heads back through the portal just long enough to fly close to Jek and Lady Kaede. Not wanting to break invisibility, he simply moves close and speaks.
"All seems safe for you to travel across, fellow Remnants. We will continue to scout along the path the map shows".
With that done, he wheels Porkins back towards the portal and heads through once more, taking to the skies on the other side so he and Spider-Greko can get a good look at the landscape.
Lady Kaede absentmindedly nods at the empty air in response to the message, and turns to Jek, quietly announces “Right, then, let’s roll.” and silently marches onward through the portal.
Finding both sides of the portal clear of danger, Rum once again lands Porkins close to the others and jumps off. He immediately appears from his invisible state, although not close enough to warrant some surprise retribution from Lady Kaede or Jek.
"Please keep watch for us, and let me know if you see anything approach", he says to Porkins in Celestial.
He places Greko down on the floor.
"Fellow Remnants, we have a decision to make. I see no sign of the enemy, nor any threat right now. Do we follow the path on the map, assuming there are worse dangers than storm troopers down here, or try and and avoid their camps but risk running into something else?".
"Perhaps better the dragon you know, as the saying went in Dragonclaw".
"I vote for following the trail, and keeping our storm trooper costumes on until we're sure we don't need them any further. Except, those guard towers marked on the map...worry me. We could get into some hairy situations there, that are best avoided all together. Perhaps we follow the trail until we get near a guard tower, and then go off the trail before they've a chance to espy us, and give them wide berth?" Lady Kaede adds.
"It seems Fellow Remnants, that we have a consensus to follow the path", Rum says, agreeing with Lady Kaede and Greko. "Let us be vigilant".
With that said, he starts out along the path, keeping a close eye for any red newts, storm troopers or other dangers. If nothing pressing presents itself, after a while, when Porkins returns he mounts up again and takes to the skies to scout.
The trail leading from the portal and further into the Great Cavern has been traversed often. There is no sign of any hostile forces along the path. The Great Cavern is a lot brighter than the Haunted Cavern; the number of bioluminescent mushrooms and arthropods is exponentially greater. There are small alcoves of glowing mushroom trees dotting the landscape here and there that aren't so different than the mushroom trees of the Mushroom Forest of Eternia.
There is no sign of the Newts on this side of the portal so far. No sound. No sightings. There are plenty of other creatures, though, and more than once they see the strange hanging filaments of the creatures that cling to the roof and pull their victims up; like the one that grabbed Lelith in the Deku Tree.
The terrain around the trail leads off into uneven boulder fields that are rife with jagged edges and deep crevices. Passing along them would be difficult to be sure.
Greko continues scouting ahead, even after days of travel...
“Is this perhaps one of the towers they featured on their map? Do you see a way of going around the path guards and cave creatures? Perhaps by flying over then?” Lady Kaede quietly adds, as if deep in thought.
