Joren has a hard time not gripping the hilt of his greatsword when Malachi brings up his suspicion.
If we cannot be trusting Lanya then what... I... if she were working with the cultists, wouldn't she have just trapped us somehow when we were sleeping at her home?Joren keeps turning it over in his head without reaching any conclusion.
He waits, sensing everyone's tension as Vilus attempts to retrieve the medallion. So exhausting, this shadow war all of us are finding ourselves in...
Lanya turns and hands the medallion over to Vilus. "Alright," she says with a smile. "Totally your call."
(Anyone can make an insight check here.)
With that, Lanya and Miter begin leading the group through the cobbled streets of Tensmith. By this point, the streets are already starting to quiet down again as the people who were coming and going have now already come and gone. The sounds of industry are as loud as ever. But unlike last night, there are still a some .people out, and shops have their doors and windows open.
After perhaps a brusque ten-minute walk, Lanya stops everyone in front of one of the few buildings taller than 1 or 2 stories. Three stories high and with a tower rising from its center, this building is clearly different from the rest. Though built from the same stone, it is lined in ornate decorations and carvings. The wide stairs leading up to the main entrance are flanked with statues of formidable looking men and women with pick axes and sacks filled with stone.
All this may have appeared out of place in such an industrial town, if it weren't for how brutalist all the design was. It occurs to Malachi, Joren, and Vilus, that this is clearly the kind of place where the wealth accumulates.
"Okay, we are here," Lanya says. "Ready?" And she starts to ascend the stairs, heading for the main entrance. The heavy stone doors swing open to reveal a large reception hall decorated with lavish carpets and large portraits of stuffy looking men of various races in suits. To the left sits a small elvish woman behind a reception counter. Her hair is in a short blonde bob, and her ears have silver studs traveling along their considerable length. Lanya approaches with purpose in her stride.
"Hello, Miss Freen. We are here to seek an audie-"
"Sorry Marshal, you'll need to make an appointment. Mayor Berg is presently engaged in an important meeting."
"I can guarantee you that this is more pressing."
"That may be so, but as I said you will need an appointment. This lockdown has brought financial issues that require careful and skilled navigation, and as such, the mayor is quite busy. The soonest I can get you in is the day after tomorrow, at the 16th bell."
"But that's..." Lanya sounds exasperated and looks back to the party as if for help.
As they take their 10 min walk through the city, Ashley has a hard time not stopping and just gaping at the city. All the sounds, the industrial buildings, the amount of people and shops. It is overwhelming and exciting all at the same time, and she catches herself several times having to jog to catch back up with the group.
Once they get inside, her eyes are drawn to the lavish carpets, the portraits, all the extravagances that the lobby portrays. She isn't sure if they just have an exuberance of money and like showing it off or are they trying to portray a certain status? It is all so confusing to her. But as the elf refuses to let them into the next chamber with the mayor, well, this will not do. Mayor or not, there was no way they were waiting until tomorrow.
Ashley steps up, knowing her presence is odd in itself, a fire genasi within the city. She stares at the elf, the flames of her hair growing as she does. She flicks her wrist and casting produce flame a ball of flame appears in her palm. She pauses a moment, then states "This is a now conversation with the Mayor. I can make this more pressing for you if you'd like, but I would rather not. It could get quite messy, and hot."
As Vilus takes the medallion he looks down at it making sure it still works, the correct colour still shining as it comes into proximity with himself and his odd magics, once verifying that it's the correct medallion he hands the thing off to Samir wordlessly.
On the way to the town hall, Vilus keeps an eye out for any telling signs of his own order within the city, he knows that they don't rightly operate this far out and if they did the chances of spotting anything concrete would be nearly zero, but still he looks (perception 17)
Once presented with the elf Freen, Vilus is not surprised at Ashley's outburst and chooses to double down on the intimidation play, albeit with a more bureaucratic approach, he puts both his large hands down on the desk and leans in toward the small elf "she's right, Miss Freen was it?, We understand that you're just doing your job, yeah? But if the mayor finds out that you kept them from the information we have, for a single moment longer than necessary... well then, you can say goodbye to your cushy office job and silvered earrings, do you understand? I hear they're wanting more administrators to corral the labourers in the mines, and that'll be if you're lucky. Check that schedule again eh? We wouldn't want you to have made a mistake." He leans back and waits patiently for the woman to decide what to do.
As Ashley and Vilus speak to the elven bureaucrat, Joren simply stands next to them, the hilt of his greatsword prominently visible from behind his shoulder. Not overtly threatening in any way. Bored, really. But clearly ready to do anything Ashley or Vilus were to ask of him to... expedite this matter.
The large rents in Joren'schain mail are clearly visible as well, hopefully adding to the sense that this is not a normal request.
Samir tries to stay in the background as the others try to gain them access to the mayor, as he knows his own demeanor and presence is, well, less than persuasive. The medallion around his neck, he keeps one hand wrapped around it like it was a lucky charm, hiding it from view other than the times he sneaks a peek at it to check for that telltale yellow color.
As the flame goes up in Ashley's hand, Freen jumps a little, dropping her quill. She doesn't bother to bend over to pick it up. Instead she tries to maintain a dignified composure as Vilus speaks his threats, though she is unable to hide the blanching of her face and flattening of her ears. Her confidence from before when she was speaking to Lanya is entirely gone. "Ah, I s-see. If that's the c-case, allow me to see if we can squeeze you in sooner."
She turns and walks out from behind the counter and walks through a large double door in the middle of the left wall. As the door opens, muted voices emerge from within, rising in volume as the door swings back closed. The reception hall stands quiet and empty, save for the adventurers, Lanya and Miter, and for the sound of angry muffled screams coming from the other side of the door.
The door opens a minute later. "-ER BARGE IN HERE LIKE THAT AGAIN OR I'LL HAVE Y-" Freen closes the door behind her and turns around. Her chin is held is she continues to put on a composed and dignified appearance, though her eyes are red and puffy and there is a shiny trail from her eye down her cheek. "So-" She flinches at the sound of something glass shattering against the other side of the door. Freen walks stiffly over to the counter and stands before everyone once again. She rubs one of her ears, takes a gulping breath, and says, "So Mayor Berg h-has a 5-minute opening in two hours if that... if that works for your schedule."
"today doesn't seem to be your day, out of curiosity who is in there now, the mayor seems irate... Or is that how they normally are?" Vilus rubs his chin and looks to Lanya for an answer to the last question.
Vilus is used to irritable leaders and knows how quickly ones rule can be deposed, especially when their subordinates have cause to want them out, he seems a little amused with himself at the thought
While Vilus, Ashley, Lanya, Miter and the others are busy with Miss Freen, Joren will unobtrusively draw Malachi aside and speak with him quietly.
"Malachi - I am spending time around people such as Marshal Lanya in the past. Watching her now, I am getting a good read and am sensing no secretive intent or duplicitous desire to hold the medallion on her part. Only earnest wishing to perform her duty. Being certainly possible you are noticing something I am not, but I am asking you to be considering another possibility. That Razmus' brief touch of your mind is enabling their foul power to slightly influence your thinking. Planting suspicion where none is warranted. Not being sure, I - just please be considering it."
"Thinking we keep our eyes and ears open, but also watching out for possible subversion being pushed inside your own head?"
Freen sniffs and looks at Vilus. "The mayor is currently sitting with financial advisors. The lockdown is bringing certain... pressures upon Mayor's shoulders, and he is gracious enough to shoulder those burdens on behalf of the citizens."
Lanya leans to Vilus and whispers, "I suspect funds are growing tight. The local economy relies pretty heavily on exports. Perhaps we should come back in a bit."She sighs. "I don't know..."
Malachi looks up sharply as Joren pulls him to the side and questions his concerns about the medallion. “What is inside my head is none of your concern, Joren, but I do not feel Razmus. My intuition has kept me safe for many years, in many situations and has served me well. The Marshal has returned the medallion now, so there is no worry.” He speaks coldly to Joren but his hand goes up to touch the mark on his forehead without thinking.
Malachi pulls away and moves toward the assistant, leaning casually on the desk and turning on his charm “I apologize, Mrs. Freen. I am sure the closure is putting immense pressure on you as well, and all the others who work here to support the Mayor, without recognition or reward. Two hours will be fine, we will take it. Thanks for your help” Malachi gives her a warm smile “What news do you hear from Talmouth, will the closure be lifted soon? Surely messages and dispatches get through, even with the city closed?” Persuasion: 8.
Freen sniffs again and looks at Malachi. "Any information that we do get certainly doesn't come through me. That's above my station."
Lanya steps back from the counter and says, "Well, 2 hours might be a good amount of time for you to get a feel for the city, see the sights, maybe restock," she looks towards the pack-less Joren at this. "If we barge in there while the mayor is in this kind of mood, I don't see us easily winning him over. Miter, can you cover my duties for the next two hours? Hold down the fort?"
"Um... Miter hang on a moment, if there's no objections I'd like to go with him" Vilus interjects turning to Lanya and the group, "just want to cover all our bases and check things out there, if the cult has infiltrated as far as we think they'll have workers at the front too, maybe the medallion might help, but I'll do a little recon and report back eh?" He gives a reassuring smile to the group.
As the ******* mayor berates the poor receptionist, Ashley feels bad for intimidating her. She puts away her fire and listens to the others, succumbing to having to wait... not her favorite thing. Wonders if the mayor really is the one to talk to? Obviously doesn't take things seriously.
As Lanya mentions taking them out to see the sights, Ashley brightens. Just the walk here was enough to floor her, to see more? Of this strange almost alien like place? She stood a little straighter, and as she gets ready to head out, Vilus surprises her with the request to go with Miter. "You sure? Did you want any of us to join you?"
Joren is troubled by Malachi's cold response to what he felt was a reasonable discussion point, but schools his face to its usual soldierly gruffness.
Perhaps I too would be taking offense if was priding myself on my mind and someone else who I was only knowing for a few days was calling it into question. I suppose I should be trusting the others here who are being more versed in... social tasks than I.
He stands ready to go with... whichever group he is supposed to go with.
Miter looks to Lanya to see how he should respond to Vilus's request to tag along. She nods back at him and he says to Vilus, "Alright. You can come with me. Let's be off."
Vilus gives a nod to Ashley, "I've got it, have a few tricks still up my sleeve if needed, don't worry... Lead the way Mr Miter!" He gives a fake salute as they leave.
In most any other circumstance, Samir would likely take the time afforded them to indulge in his ideas and schematics, but in the here and now, so recently removed from their trek beneath the earth, his mind takes a different direction.
"I think that I would very much like to find a place to have a quiet, relaxed meal. Something with a pleasant outdoor table. No rushing, or worrying about... things. A place where one can refresh themselves and their thoughts with good food and chilled drinks. Would anyone else like to come with me?"
Malachi looks at Freen “You don’t give yourself enough credit my dear. Why I bet that you practically run this place. The mayor couldn’t find his ass with both hands without you. Remember that” Malachi gives a wink and a smile, pats the table with his hand and moves to rejoin the others.
“That sounds perfect, Samir. A little food and drink, perhaps learn a thing or two about the town. We should all go. But first, I need to stop by a store, a general merchant or bookkeeping store.” He pats his pockets and looks at Ashley with embarrassment “I may need to borrow some of the coin you found, I am a little short.”
Miter heads off with Vilus back towards the mines as the others begin to filter out. Freen doesn't look Malachi in the eyes, but a bit of a red creeps into the tips of her ears at his remarks.
Marion speaks up thoughtfully, "I too would like to find a quiet place. I think I need time to collect myself and pray. Things have been complicated, and I've not had much space to catch my breathe so to speak, and I am in need of some recentering. Perhaps the Blue Lady will have some guidance for me."
